We all know the food industry is cutting sizes. Half gallons are no more. Coffee packages keep shrinking. I am waiting for a dozen eggs to be 10 based on "customer feedback" or some other MBA marketing BS spin. So we all also know model train prices are going up, rapidly. So, why don't HO manufacturers simply start packaging N scale trains in the boxes and keep pricing the same ?

They wouldn't sell more than maybe 28% of their stock?
They could do even better if they downsized the boxes to N scale products, but that 28% problem would still be there. :-)

Dang, I wasn't counting on the recession to downsize my scale! I have heard of the odd report of food or other items being sold in smaller quantities so "fool" the customer into thinking the product hadn't gone up in price, or by much.
As for boxes, I was looking at the boxes my 2-packs of 89' Walthers TT flat cars came in vs the flat cars - seems like they could be half the size! They are huge and the flat cars are so skinny, I could cut down on the storage space of my trains significanly if I could rebox many of them.

So why not Z scale and even better, invent ZZZ which has not been done yet but this new scale is so small it cannot be seen! That way, the manufacturers can deliver extrememly small boxes with nothing in them but at a very low price. Wait a minute, I want to see my trains!!!!! Sorry, I over thought that one! Larry

Downsize my scale!i think not. After rethinking the scale factor, I agree HO should be HO size and we should all run one to one scale with the Big Boys. After all, by switching to one to one, the track and landscape is already done. Larry

I got it! I'll buy the downsized O scale, HO trains in O boxes, that way I can stay in the same scale and enjoy the "savings"!
