Hi Guys:
Have been around for awhile, but have not posted much, the time has come I need your help. I plan to install a Tsunami sound decoder in and older, favorite Atlas loco. Space is very limited to say the least. The decoder comes with a attached capacitor. What is it for and do I need it to have the sound and decoder work right ? If its not needed it will save alot of space I need for the specker and decoder. Any input would be a great help thank you.

Which Tsunami model are you planning on using? Since you mentioned Atlas I will assume you will use the TSU-AT1000 board replacement model. Be aware that depending on the particular ATLAS engine you may not be able to fit the Tsunami in, as some of the ATLAS light boards are shorter than the Tsunami, and the front/rear weights prevent the Tsunami to "drop in".
The capacitor is use to maintain the sound over short interruptions of power, like a piece of dirty track or over an insulated switch frog.

Since you say it's an "older" Atlas engine, the AT-1000 should fit just fine. As mentioned, the capacitor is a small "stay alive" for the audio section of the decoder only. If your track is clean and you have good contact with your engine, you should be able to get along without it. Try running the engine without the capacitor and see how it goes. If the sound keeps cutting out due to intermittent power drops and restarting, you may need to re-install it. This is an installation in an old Atlas RS3 using an AT-1000. The rear weight was cut down for the 16mm X 35mm speaker and the capacitor neatly tucked up on the end of the weight .... Mark.

Thank you for the information. As I have other units with sound decoders and they work Ok I assume this decoder should work also. Was not sure the capacitor was needed for decoder to function. This the first Tsunami that i've used, and the first with a capacitor. I do keep the track clean as the old engines do not like dirty. Thanks again.
