Question for you all. I have an older run Bowser C-630. It's from maybe 5 years ago or so. Anyway, it runs very well but sometimes when I go to start it up it shorts out my DCC system. If I take the shell off, rotate the motor a bit it runs fine. I have looked at the contacts for the brushes and see nothing shorting from one to another. Cleaned with 91% alcohol but it still happens maybe once every 6 months or so.
Any ideas?

Does it have a factory decoder, or did you install your own? I have a bunch of the older Stewart Alcos but only one Bowser. I installed a TCS decoder in it I believe. It's a fairly new one (C&O C630). If there are no wiring issues, you may need to replace the motor. The Stewart Alcos had Buehler motors which can be ok... or not so ok.

Chad, A friend of mine bought four of those from that run, and all of them had bad motors and did exactly as yours did. He complained to Bowser, and they sent him replacement motors. One of these replacements had the same problem, and he got another replacement which worked. I guess they had a bad batch of motors for that production run.

Thanks for the information. I'll contact Bowser and see what they say. I guess push comes to shove I can buy a new motor for it. I would assume a Genesis motor will fit.

I decided not to wait for a response from Bowser and went ahead and bought an A-Line motor. Got the Mashima 1833 Flat Can and all I can say it WOW. What a fine motor. Super smooth and incredible low speed operation plus it is dead silent. Now this 5 or 6 year old engine is my best running. They are pricey at $45.00 but well worth it.
