The bridge at the north end of Enola was a hot spot way back in the day. And there was the "railfan McDonald's" across the way from the yard. Is that still there? The NS Pittsburgh Line is still a good location to see steel wheels on steel tracks. With all of the spots that no longer even have trains, don't take for granted those still busy mainlines! Yes, the MacDonalds is still there, or was last February, last time I was there. The Iron Bridge is still a good spot but it was replaced with a new bridge years ago with fencing on both sides. Shockingly, NS cut viewing ports into the fence but you need to be at least 5' 10" tall to use them. Also, they added a height detector on the outbound tracks which did not help and the brush and trees are slowly ruing the inbound tracks. Here's two from 2006 and 2007.

Actually, the replacement bridge over Enola Yard was constructed by PennDOT, though it's on a non-state highway; there were state and I believe federal funds involved, and it was PennDOT who provided the photo viewing ports (there were lengthy discussions about how they were going to make provision for the rail photographers and how wide the paved shoulder should or should not be versus the available funding at the time). As a "non-standard" design, that was the best design that was acceptable to PennDOT at the time. NS probably did not want the viewing ports to be any larger than they are.
There are issues both in PA and all over the Northeast now, where they do not want people having access to overpasses above railroads and highways, because the idiots go out and drop refrigerators on train tracks just to see what happens when the train hits it. This means the visibility of the train tracks and roads below will be further restricted at most locations in the future. The bridge over Enola Yard's northern lead tracks was a special design to still allow photo access. There was public support due to the "exceptional value" of that location. Don't count on other bridges having photographer openings in the fencing in the future.
The McDonalds across the street from Enola Yard was bulldozed to the ground and replaced with a brand new, updated design, McDonald's about one year ago.
P.S. There have been a few instances on the PA Turnpike where the idiots dropped rocks onto moving cars, with at least one recent fatality. I'm a design consultant working on behalf of both PennDOT and the PA Turnpike.

That's good to know about the Macdonalds, I must have been one of the last lucky customers, and didn't realize it.

OFF TOPIC ALERT!
Why do the tops of the cabs, noses and long hoods of many Conrail diesels rust? I used to see this on Conrail power that worked the hot metal trains or bottle cars in the south suburbs of Chicago and Northwest Indiana. Steel mills produce emissions that are or were corrosive. This is why steel mill employees never drove "good" cars to work!

I've heard that CR/NS later regretted that the 4th track over the mountains west of Altoona was removed. Perhaps the camera ports were put in just in case it ever goes back in.

I totally agree they are no more then common thieves.

No one is perfect, but I appreciate it when a company stands behind their product, and rights something that was wrong. it seems like more companies are doing this. Maybe they realize a satisfied customer is a returning customer. That's good!

Part of the cab roof rust issue is that Conrail used iron brake shoes instead of the composite stuff most other railroads use. The brake dust would end up on the roof, where it would almost never get washed. The rust from the dust would eat into the finish, staining it rust-color.
