Guy i see by the wire color code you cannot plug NMRA 8 pin decoder into 8 pin socket of ESU decoder tester as the red wire does not match the EURO NEM configuration correct??. SO do you have to connect loose wires into manual wire attachment screw terminal??. Thanks Steve.

Rethinking this if I use mainly TCS decoders should I purchase TCS M ant T harness UK style to test decoders so the color wire pin out is correct for the ESU decoder tester. Its a bit of a pain wireing up individual wires to the tester. Thanks Steve

Steve,
I've been plugging decoders with the NMRA 8-pin connector into my Loksound Tester with no problems.
Pin 1 on the NMRA 8-pin connector should have an orange wire connected to it. Pin 1 on the tester's NEM 652 socket is the one marked with the asterisk (star). Everything should line up okay.
The NEM 652 configuration is identical to the NMRA Medium 8-pin configuration.
Are you seeing something different?

Its states in manual ensure red wire on the astrix marked on the tester board.?. This is why I am stumped .Orange does but not red in terms of 8 pin NMRA decoder. This is the newer tester if that makes a difference or if its a misprint. Need to know for sure as iam not into destroying things on a chance. Thanks Steve

The manual indicates the asterix should co-relate to the red wire. I'm willing to bet it's just a typo as I've been using my tester for years as well with no problems .... but I never read the manual to see that it states the red wire when it should be the orange wire. Instructions are only for when it doesn't actually work ! Mark.

I've sent a note to ESU to have the Decoder Tester instructions corrected to say the "orange" wire.
Hope you're good to go Steve.
Cheers,
David

Thanks Mark.A typo. Maybe the tech was color blind. Works great and glad I have it. Need to rig it up to test light board type decoders with the 4 contacts on each end. Maybe some one makes miniature clips with wires on them, any thoughts?.Thanks Steve

Hi Steve, To test the light board type decoders I made up a set of clip leads using Pomona MicroGrabber test clips. You can get the grabbers individually by colour or in a 10 colour set. Putting the wires on them is quite easy, the tops just slide off. David

Hi Steve,
Wouldn't you know it, the Micrograbbers have been discontinued because of an RoHS issue. I did find a couple of alternatives at Digikey:
501-1534-ND - Pomona Part# 5522 Minigrabbers (set of 10 colours) $21.84 - these are a slightly larger version of the ones I am using
461-1006-ND - E-Z-Hook Micro Test Connectors Part# XM-S (set of 10 colours) $20.09 - I haven't used these but they look to be the equivalent of the Micrograbbers I'm using
Hope this helps.
David

Steve,
Let me know how they work out, I'd be interested in this since I'm often asked about the set I have.
When I made up my set the price was about $11 for the 10 colours, seemed reasonable at the time.
