I have started sending out new parts for the C636. I responded to every email request for the parts so if you did not hear from me please call. 800-327-5126. I get about 2000 junk emails per day and some customers get into the spam folder. I have read a few comments and i hope you all like the tanks etc. The second shipment of C636 is done and waiting for pickup at the factory. It takes at least 30 days to made the long ocean voyage. Just a little more info. C415 is progressing very well. MLW M636 is going to the US mold maker next week. I have created a mold making nightmare. There are 37 possible inserts into the tools so we can make M636's, M-630 and maybe in the future M630W I am headed to Roanoke VA to the museum to measure the RS-3 Phase 3 loco there. The RS-3 CP chop nose is being measured for me out on Vancouver Island Canada. I have measured the LV hammer head and the D&H chop nose. This is a huge project and will take a couple of years to get all the versions. Just got drawings for the KC PCC street car. The road name i like is the BiCent Phila with names of the 13 colonies. I am looking for information for any of the projects i listed above. I would like to design with help from modelers first and not try to fix after. Sorry this got long. Bravo for Bowser! I read the Athearn announcement and misread where it saidI scooped 3 back up.bulbs would be installed in the replacement shell and thought (hoped) it said LEDs installed. Moot point for me since I returned my LV units because of the color. Bill McBride Bill I to returned mine because of the color, then when Athearn said in Cleveland they were going to offer replacements I scooped 3 back up.

Great to hear about the C415, now I just have to figure out which one I want, SP&S/BN or SP, or do I take the easy, more expensive, way out and get one of each?
cheers,
Lorne Miller

Well two of the SP units since they were usually worked in pairs. These may be my personal "most wanted" units since I grew up watching them work out between City of Industry and West Colton.

Lee English President Bowser Mfg I will point out that builder's photos of ALL of the C-415's are available from Alco Historic Photos. That includes the Alco demonstrator. I think they're all 4x5's, so they should show great detail. I recommend obtaining them. Ed

Everything from here on out, including the second run leaving for the USA soon, would have the upgraded trucks and fuel tanks. Bill McBride

The ones that are currently on the market (Athearn, Atlas, and Bachmann) all have shells with varying degrees of errors not to mention that they are all Phase 1b shells. I am also glad to hear of the possibility of a Phase 3 RS-3 in HO that doesn't involve kitbashing as two of the railroads that model [the L&N and TC] had them. I had hoped that Athearn was going partially retool their model with the release of their RS-3 in NKP (another owner of the Phase 3), but they took the easy way out and just used their existing shell. The other locomotives [chopped-nose CP's, Hammer head's, and D&H RS3m's] are icing on the cake.

Found a nice big box from Bowser outside my door this morning. Yep, it was the parts for my 7 units. However, the fuel tanks for the 2 Demos were missing the fuel fillers, no real problem, just reused the ones off the old tanks after carefully removing them. Thanks Bowser!

My new parts were shipped via US Postal Service. My PC unit underwent the knife this evening; here are the results: Is it possible to see the other side pic.

Well I'm pretty impressed with how the conversion turned out. I may have to go back to the well and buy the third IC maybe next month. Now all i need is a Atlas IC WV caboose and I'm all set.
Maybe some "what if schemes" down the road. I believe the Milwaukee Road was considering purchasing a few of these.

Has anyone installed new trucks, and used a centered shank coupler instead?

Has anyone installed new trucks, and used a centered shank coupler instead? Dave Yep, I did. Just thinned the original shim that came on my units until I got the height correct.I'm not a big fan of offset shank Kadees, and I use the scale head couplers anyway.

Did you use a shorter shank?

Post by roadkill on Jan 15, 2015 17:34:23 GMT -8
No, but I am thinking of changing to the standard shank scale head Kadee. Don't like the looks of the long shank coupler sticking out like it does.

Looking at prototype pics, the couplers do stick out a way to clear the striker plate. I don't know a medium shank will fit in there now that I'm looking at it more.

Bigblow, was Milwaukee really interested,or was Alco really trying to convince them to try the C636s ? in any event, Milwaukee went with U33Cs and SD45s. Alco also tried to sell the CF636 to Santa Fe,but that never happened either. still have the Preston Cook CF636 article and proposed drawings around here. so between the last year of Baldwin production, only really [2]3 models, the S-12 and AS-416 were built. EDIT - forgot about the RP-210,3 built,1 for NYC,2 for New Haven,Hydraulic drive. but in Alco's last year they built T-6,C415,C420,C-430, C628,C636,and DL535Es, 7 models. most orders were small quanties, but it seems that Alco could have stayed in awhile longer if Studebaker-Worthington would have let them. The long shank coupler is probably to allow you to run tighter radius curves and not derail the first car behind the engine.

Big Blow, looked like an Alco Proposal to Milwaukee, that meant that they listened to Alco, but didn't bite. if Alco could have sent the C636 Demos to Milwaukee they may have had better results, but think this was before the Demos were built. guess Alco was relying on the group that had the RSC-2s rebuilt to sway the Odds in their favor ?
