Guess I'm not the only one that got a good night's sleep for a change... A view of the engine terminal in Durango. One of the improvements this week, a ramp for getting vehicles loaded circus style. Mainly it's for those vehicles being driven on, although it can also serve to load trailers if the overhead lift is down. The stanchions for the handrail are Athearn. Finally, a double-header turning on the wye in Silverton in front of the Hotel Mears... And returning to Silverton as it passes under the tramway bridge at Chattanooga.

This last weekend I got some time and got some work done on my project, the P&LE Hot Coil Car. Assembled the end blocks for the car by attaching the top brace to the block and then small triangular braces on the top of the block. Trimmed the end of the strip that I installed earlier so I could install the end blocks. End blocks installed, showing all the blocks installed on the frame. After installing the end blacks installed the name plates for the end lettering and the plate for the brake gear and wheel. Drilled holes for the walk over platform and a small hole at each end for some part to be installed in the future. End view of all the blocks with the name plates etc installed. Added an angle iron on the top of the frame and cleaned the flash from the auxiliary air reservoir along with drilling a hole for a pipe and installing same. Now up to page 17 of the 54 pages of instructions. Rick J

Great pictures all for sure for sure but Rick that last pic..... why bother buddy? It is so blurry you just can't make out anything. I am not busting your chops at all I am just using it in general to let everyone know, if it is not a clear photo don't put it up. It is just wasting bytes on the sever. That's all.

Good morning guys, Just finished up two of my three 636 conversions. They run much better now. My contribution for the week. Fresh from the shops after its complete rebuild, the AV 500 is heading north toward Springfield MO. She is about to cross Hwy 7 in north Arkansas not too far south of Dogpatch. Turner Creek passes below just before it flows into the Buffalo River. Have a great week.....

My contribution for the week, a Southern Proto boxcar. Couldn't find any prototype photos of these cars, so pretty much straight kit built. Replaced the drop grabs on the end with hand bent wire grabs, and substituted A-Line stirrups.

Wow, great work as usual from this group! Chris, Go to trainlife.com and look up these magazine articles for more information on your Southern P2K boxcar (the achieves should be nearly restored by now) “AAR 50-Foot Steel Automobile Cars of the 1940s”, Railmodel Journal, October 1995, p. 20 – 25. “Automobile Cars AAR 50-Foot Steel”, Railmodel Journal, March 1996, p. 50-53. “AAR 50-Foot Steel Automobile Cars of the 1940s”, Railmodel Journal, September, 1996, p. 48-52. [Note: This article covers P2Ks other 50ft car with end doors.] If you’re planning to build more of these kits and don’t want to bend your own stirrups again; visit Yardmouth Model Works and check out their detail parts. They offer etched stirrups that fit the P2K cars. Thanks, Mark

Have a great week..... Sharp looking unit! Are the three C636's going to be painted in the same scheme? Stephen, I've got one in the paint booth now that will be painted blue and white. However, the IC and Demo units will remain as is. The IC stays as is because I grew up on the IC down in MS and ended up working for the ICG for a stretch. The IC C636 is my all time favorite. The Demo WAS blue and white but was painted in the Alco demo colors as a tribute to ALCO. aka...a heritage unit of sorts. The AV is about 60% Alco. You might say that it is the BC Rail of the south. In the AV "world", MLW finished "as is" all the remaining orders that were on the books when Alco shut down. I'm a sucker for the Hi-Ad truck, so I'm wondering what a MLW M630 and M640 will look like with Hi-Ad trucks if I can make the swap.

Bobby, All of your tanks cars just blow me away. The detail level you put into them is unbelievable. When I worked for the ICG, I held down jobs up in Good Hope and Reserve LA and these types of tank cars were quite common. I was right in the middle of "Chemical Alley" between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Do you ever plan on modeling a "Candy Cane" tank car?

Regards, Bobby Bobby, I can not recall the commodity or the kind of tank car it was in, but the crews called them Candy Canes. The commodity at the time was the most hazardous product on the rails. The tank cars were white with a red band running down the length of the car in the middle and two red bands around the tank on each end. Then there was a huge placard on the side of the car describing in detail what the product was and all the precautions. It was some real mean sh*t. The local AAR BOE agent was a friend and he said if one ever came off the rails, head to Texas!!

Bobby,
Just looked it up HYDROGEN CYANIDE
Some rr's call them candy stripes. Saw different patterns, but they all were white with red bands.

Ryan, nice job on the two units. The Cotton Belt GE is beautiful. Few people bother with the Cotton Belt units, they just do the SP versions. Really nice. The late 70's UP unit is a beauty too. TBird the F-7 looks good. Brad nice weathering job on the CC box car.
Bobby that is one monster, whose span bolster car was it. You don't have a painted side view so that we can see the numbers or the marks. Incredible modeling as usual. By the way I believe the cars KC is referring to originated out of a DuPont Cyanide Products facility in Millington (Woodstock), Tennessee, which was on the IC(G). Bill

My curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to try out one of the Accurail PS 4750 hopper kits. I came away favorably impressed. As is mandatory for any Accurail car I build, I replaced the Accumate couplers with Kadees, and substituted metal wheelsets (36" in this case). Since there are no cast-on roof grabs, I fabricated some grabs from brass wire. Per prototype photos, the grabs are yellow, helping them to stand out as separate parts. I also added ACI labels based on the photos. With some weathering this thing shouldn't be too bad. For comparison, the BN car at right is from Tangent. Here's Tangents rendition of the CNW cars. Accurail omits much of the small lettering, such as from the underbody and ends.

Thanks Bill. I'll add a side view photo. The car was a insulated high pressure car when new. It was rebuilt into a Ethylene Glycol car.The outer skin and insulation were removed, a man way cover added along with low pressure valve and drain valve. I have a photo of it as new, not nearly as interesting after rebuild. I have no idea what it hauled when new, nor does anyone I've talked to. KC and Bill, Hydrogen Cyanide is as nasty as you get, thanks. Regards, Bobby www.rr-fallenflags.org/misc-d/dupx12403wba.jpgI found a photo of the car with it's outer skin. It's a bad photo, but you'll get the idea of how it looked.

Haven't really done anything the last week or so. Just been so drained on my days off. I work a 12 hour midnight schedule. But I did win this last week. No idea what happeend to the cab if it fell and broke, if it got lost. No idea. It's an Athearn SD70ACE that was previously painted in BNSF as evident by the orange on the inside and the silver truck sideframes that weren't painted on the bottom and the silver frame. Underframe looks like it was brushed on the tank and horribly painted on the frame as the silver bleeds through on the corners. Shell is ehhh, it looks thick. Decals are not applied correctly as the clear part is not clear anymore but silvery. Good thing its getting stripped hopefully this weekend. Oh and i won it for $65 shipped to my door. was hoping it had sound, but it doesn't. crappy pics from ebay my pic when i opened it up at work. Thankfully I still have my athearn sd70m-2/ace cab i bought 2 years ago for painted unit taht hit the floor. If i wasn't able to fix that cab i'de be ordering another one. So once this is stripped, i'll be ordering another PTC roof piece from athearn, coupler pockets. I have a few extra etched pieces taht will make its way on to this one.

I have two of these Proto boxcars (one now assembled). They really don't fit my needs (even with a recent change in era) so I really don't anticipate buying more (these ones were too cheap to pass up and I had a kitbash idea for them that I didn't pursue). I appreciate the link for the detail parts but I don't think I'll bother for one more car. Besides, it never hurts to practice scratchbuilding skills!

My curiosity got the best of me, and I decided to try out one of the Accurail PS 4750 hopper kits. I came away favorably impressed. The new Accurail CF4750 does look quite good in it's class. I love the highly detailed models from Tangent and ExactRail, as much as anyone but I do plan on adding a few of the Accurail cars to my fleet in the coming year, assuming I can get my hands on some of the road names I want this spring. They do seem to be selling out fast, which is good for Accurail but not so good for those who didn't get them when they shipped! I expect Accurail will re-run any road name which is popular eventually. Looks very good!
