A few brief comments on the Great Scale Show at Timonium yesterday...
Overall a very nice show with good attendance (although attendees later in the day were having issues finding parking). Weather was good (although a bit cold to those waiting to get in), with both worse forecast and the big football game perhaps enticing some to attend on Saturday instead of waiting until Sunday.
Several very nice displays. A few manufacturers/importers - Spring Mills and Exactrail among them. A few vendors with newer items, but not many... a continuing trend. Many tables of modelers thinning collections or estate sales.
Many, many good bargains to be found...
Examples of a few items (all HO and all new in box) I bought... Walthers Ford Auto Distribution Facility for $20 Several Walthers $23 MSRP cars for $11.50 each, and $20 MSRP cars at $10 each Walthers ADM Trinity 6351 4-bay covered hopper for $18 Exactrail NS 60' DD HC boxcar for $16 Atlas Genstar container 3-pack $15 New Greg Scholl DVDs at $10 each
Bargains I resisted (perhaps I should not have)... BLMA TopGons (from latest run) $15 each Many Walthers buildings at 50% off MSRP or less (a fellow club member was happy to find the Valley Cement for $45) Many older Walthers cars at great prices - like 86' boxcar 2-packs for $24 (a friend was happy to find Superliners at $10-12 each) Athearn Genesis EL SD45-2 with sound $125 IM NS Lehigh Valley Heritage ES44 for $100
A great show...

I wish we had one of these "large" shows here in CO (unless we do and Im just uninformed). There's a bunch of stuff I want (Walthers lpg tank car kits, first run Athearn CR gp15-1s, atlas CR b23-7) that just wont pop up at the one show I know about, and I don't think I'll find outside of a show.

Genesis with sound for $125 is a giveaway I agree that some of their blow out sales on Genesis products have been very good for us. Larry

Yes, there were lots of good deals at the show. I found a book I've been interested in for the past 5 years, Crest of the Continent by Chuck Conway. I've never seen it for under $69 and it's always been shrink wrapped so I couldn't preview it. A fellow had a lightly used copy there I was able to get for $55, that was most of my budget spent - picked up a couple Front Range kits and a Red Caboose SP flat car RTR with wood deck for a good price $20. That's me good until the next show.

I was a vendor there for many years. Last was @ 2010. Shut business down to pursue other things. However, I continued to visit as a customer. I hit nearly every one as it is only an hour away.
The winter show is always heavier on Saturday due to the Super Bowl. The threat of the still-born winter storm also should have sent more people on Saturday. However, this was the least attended Saturday Winter show that I ever remember. I was there all day representing the PRRT&HS and there was one surge between noon and 1 p.m. or so, but otherwise pretty dead.
The fall show is usually the best. This past fall it was so-so. Bar Mills usually does the fall show only, but didn't.
The spring show is usually so-so, and the summer show is so small it is held in a smaller venue and is more like a large yard sale.

I think I would have nabbed that EL SD45-2. Who runs this show?

Yes, it was a great show...both as a seller, and buyer. I was selling mostly old Athearn blue box items (used). Lots of $5, and $7 dollar items. Even after spending money on some new toys, I still came out in the black.
Scored some nice previously-owned structures for a song, a pair of Eel River beer cars, new in box for $25. I saw (but did not buy) older run Walthers 86' auto parts boxcars for $9 each. Lots of deals if you were looking for new old-stock, or gently used items.
I'm not in the market for them, but I did see Kato Maxi stacks for $73. IIRC, that's a fairly steep discount from the $100+ retail.

Lots of good prices but I have so much stuff now I'm only buying the odd item here and there, but for someone trying to build a fleet, it's always good to go to a big show.

I think I would have nabbed that EL SD45-2. Who runs this show? Great Scale Train Show gsmts.com The EL SD45-2 was an item on the white elephant table likely put up for sale by a show attendee... It was there at Noon Saturday and at 3:00 but not at 4:30 - but by then most people had picked up their white elephant items so might have sold, might not have...

That is different than it sounded which was a new unit a dealer was selling. It is not likely at a train show dealers are selling new Athearn Genesis with sound units for $125.

EL SD45-2 was brand new in the box looking as if it had never been taken out of the box... By the way, all of the other items I noted were at dealer tables. There were many bargains on used items and estate items too, but I didn't mention those...

There's an ad on page 87 of the March MR for the Rocky Mountain Train Show in Denver on March 7-8. More info at: www.rockymountaintrainshow.comSupposed to be the biggest train show west of the Mississippi.

I couldn't get there. Was sick and also it was in direct conflict with a big new car show at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Building in Harrisburg. There are people I know who have attended Timonium, at least in the past, besides myself, who definitely attended the car show instead, this time. I have a 13 year old son who is fascinated by exotic high performance cars. At that show he actually gets to touch them and even sit in them! Indoors and not out in the weather! To him, it's priceless--and they hand out all kinds of free brochures. My wife even had a good time there. At how many car shows do you actually get to touch the cars, pop the hood, open the trunk, climb in the front and rear seat (if there is one), have your photo taken sitting in the driver's seat, and nobody yells at you for touching the car? (Except a few of the Porsches were no touch, but half the Porsches you actually can touch, including a Boxster.) I have to say, it beats dealing with occasionally very grumpy train dealers who sometimes don't want anyone touching their stuff.

You can't actually know if you want a particular brass model without actually touching it and checking it out.
I used to buy/trade HO brass at Timonium, and was always rabid to get there....also worked on behalf of a dealer or two as an extra set of eyes (for the privilege of getting in the door and trading before the paying public could) and tried to help the brass buyers out with their questions as best I could. But that was 20 years ago, and a lot has changed since then.
The dealers got so many free entrance passes back then they could not use them all for just husband/wife--and would give them away to friends they trusted who would help out by watching the tables to make sure stuff didn't get stolen, etc. This also allowed them time to be able to take a break or go trade with other dealers while knowing their stuff was in honest hands.
