Just picked up a Lionel Veranda, but the "reverse" light on the tender doesn't work. Unfortunately, Lionel is no longer in the HO business, so I can't get any help from them. There are two wire leads that plug unto receptacles on the loco. I'm not sure if the LED is bad or if there's a circuit/decoder issue in the loco. The reverse light on the loco works fine. Any suggestions on how to test the LED? How can I check if there is power at the receptacles on the loco? I really don't want to dismantle the loco. Everything else about this loco is fine: runs great and decoder functions all work.

Have you checked LIONEL web pages to see if there is any reference material there? I have 2 of their 4-6-6-4 Challengers from the same era and found info there for them. It's been awhile so it may be gone.

Karl,
Thanks for the suggestion. I didn't see anything on the Lionel website, other than a few parts for the HO Veranda. But the back-up light/PCB are not available.
However, I found an old message board where someone indicated that Lionel failed to include a resistor in the back-up LED circuit. I determined that the back-up LED was bad and installed a new 3v LED, with an appropriate resister, on the PCB and it now works like a charm.
How did we survive without the Internet? :-).
