Gents, reading through the PRR book on passenger coaches mention is made of some of the carriages having ice air conditioning. How and where would the ice be delivered and stored on the cars please? Jim Brodie.

Ice was mostly used on Pullman owned equipment. Icing would be done by Pullman personnel. Most likely at a Pullman terminal facility. Certainly right on the passenger platform at smaller stops. Below is a photo showing the bunkers being topped off. A car would hold 3 to 5 tons of ice. That's twenty to thirty of the large blocks seen at the back of the ice cart in the photo. Ice would come from where ever the railroad or Pullman had storage. Ice for these purposes often came in refrigerator cars from a central location. Don't forget dining car ice. That was stored in overhead bunkers.
