I read that there are 40 container ships stranded off the western coast due to the labor action.....the dock strike. Has anyone heard that companies have said that any of our dearly awaited models are involved?

We'll see if the Genesis UP/NS SD70M flared will make it on time or be delayed another 2 months.

Read the X58 post. I'm sure Tangent isn't the only company. It's a pretty big mess, the company I work for is suffering from a lack of product due to West Coast post delay. We have 15-20 Cans worth of light fixtures in sitting in Elliott Bay within sight of our warehouse, further, ships are not leaving Asian ports. Similar for out Portland, OR warehouse.

I feel sorry for the workers since the average salary has been quoted as $140,000 a year. Yes part of that is overtime, but it is hard to believe they could live in LA or San Francisco on that money. In the meantime, customers waiting on products making half that are wondering how you get those jobs. Larry

I did some quick checking and it appears the Washington DC area has a higher cost of living (area where I live). I can only imagine would it would be like to struggle along at 140k!

Slowdown, not a strike. Dockworkers working, just not full shifts.

How come there isn't an Executive Order for X58 boxcar emergencies? Mine are on order, along with some gons, and I'm feeling feverish. Think it may be contagious, and there's no vaccine...

Highly likely the Atlas GP40s, originally slated for 4Q '14 delivery, are also stuck there...at least that is the rumor as no one at Atlas is certain what week of March, perhaps April, they'll arrive.
As for California dock worker wages, keep in mind each dollar out there only has ~$0.60 worth of purchasing power (population density drives the price of everything higher).

Based on the figures I just googled, DC area residents must have ~$0.50 worth of purchasing power then. No wonder I don't have much left to spend on trains. How do I apply for a dock workers job?

It's not "60% less" rather you get 40 percent less of whatever you buy if $1 only buys you ~$0.60 worth of goods.

Amen brother $145,000 + a year Full benefits Nice pension Protected by local state and fed govt agencies The best case is we have the Chinese finish widening the canal then bypass the crazy expensive west coast ports for some in the east very hungry for the business and work. Can't come soon enough.

That makes absolutely no sense So a dollar is worth a dollars in 2015 where in the USA? You can't say a dollar doesn't by a dollars worth where the vast majority of Americans live. What is buys there is what the dollar is worth!

The dockworkers are making an average of $140,000 plus great health (value approx $40,000) and retirement plans. RS (geographer)

By the way the only costs that are higher in CA are housing and gasoline, everything else is comparable to costs in the rest of the US and many fresh fruit and vegitables are cheaper. Rick J

The port of Newark has been dredged to allow the post panamax ships and they are also raising the Bayonne bridge to allow taller ships to clear it.

Please investigate before saying not going to happen. Norfolk and Newport News Port Elizabeth Other ports further south like Jacksonville are working on them The Panama canal is not being widened just to send ships from China to Europe.

I also read in Saturday's paper that another reason for slow catch up on the backlog is lack of semi trucks. You'd never know there was a "shortage" by the numbers of semi's on I80 here in Nebraska-Iowa. Bob

Bob Here in NJ, some of the ports have these racks that hold the trailer frames that carry this cargo containers, none of these racks have any trailers on them. I used to see a few here and there, but they have been empty for a long time. And there better not be someone saying there is a container shortage, there are mountains of them in Newark, NJ some 10 high and just rows upon rows deep.
