Yup, just last Monday I was told by the crew up at Hobby Express, in Cranberry, that my B&O Bird car had arrived on the advertised. Oh joy, the plan was to head up there today to jump enthusiastically on said Bird car! Well, a call to Gwen and Beth Ann revealed that this was not a dream, and that I should scoot up ASAP. And I did. Well, not only was the "Bird" nested in the holding case, but WOW, here were both cars of the loooong awaited PS twin unit diner! Good Golly! I ain't got that kinda dough today. But these two units are drop dead gorgeous...just like last month's PS 10-6 sleeper. Whew, this train is really coming together, with six cars out thus far. so my question for the truly informed of the B&O passenger fans is: which, if any of these sleepers were used in coast to coast through operations? Any west coast sleepers ever show up on the Cap. during her prime? Thanks !

I feel your joy, congratulations. I always feel excited when I received a package from a train shop.

I have the "De Luxe" cars on order through Overland Hobbies and Brian Marsh has informed me that there will be a delay in shipping the diners. Anybody know what the problem was? I thought I saw the regular run at MB Klein a week or two back. Ed

Maybe the shipment is held up at the ports due to the strike activity.

Yinz guys should have scooted up to Butler. They are starting to chop up hoppers from Wednesday's Bessemer derailment.

As for the Deluxe versions, I've been picking these cars up first, a good idea, so that you know the names that Walthers used, and can decal the standard cars not to duplicate car names. I was surprised today when the Deluxe versions of the Bird car and the two Diner components were not yet delivered. Gonna have to guess, AFAIK, on the names and numbers...unless the other Deluxe cars get here quick ! Even so, these three new releases are just gorgeous beyond belief !

Same goes for the twin diner, although the diners were a bit ahead of schedule. That's five of ten in hand. The coach, baggage-dormitory and dome coach are all now scheduled for June 2015 delivery, with the sleeper dome and observation due July and August. I suspect the Chinese New Year, as well as the now resolved LA Docks labor dispute all affect delivery and production schedules. Nice looking train, so far. The decal sets cover all possible names/numbers for the fluted sleepers, Birds, diners and slumbercoach. As far as I know, none of the B&O cars in this train operated off line until the Birds were re-designated as Slumber Room Coaches. Then they ran on the C&O and were leased to then sold to the SCL, along with the sleeper-domes diners and slumbercoaches.

Any west coast sleepers ever show up on the Cap. during her prime? Thanks ! The Capitol carried a Santa Fe sleeper from post-war until Jan, 1957. The car ran in both directions on the Cap for a connection with ATSF Train 19 to LA or Train 20 from LA until 1951, when the service expanded to include San Diego, via ATSF trains 19-74 and 71-20. Sometime between then and 1954 (I have a gap in my timetables, but if I recall correctly, it was 1953) the service changed, and the Westbound car was moved to the Shenandoah, where it then went to LA only on ATSF #17 and returned on the Eastbound Cap from ATSF 18. Originally, the car was a Santa Fe Valley series 6s-6r-4dbr; this changed in 1951 to a Pine series 10r-6dbr. Walthers has done both of these cars, but if you want the earlier Valley car, you need to find one in the Santa Fe's two-tone gray scheme. The more common solid car is a later paint scheme from after when the car type was changed. No B&O cars were carried through. Hope this helps, Greg
