My name is Mike Fifer and many here may remember me from the Atlas forum ( that may be good or bad) LOL. I am posting this here as I have a question about posting HO items we have for sale from a purchased Hobby Shop Estate. I know I just found the re-birthed group but wondering if it would be OK to post the info on the sale of these things as I do not want to be a spammer. Any admin chime in here? Thanks so much , Mike Fifer Fifer Hobby Supply

Mike, welcome to the Atlas Forum, reimagined. In the past, for sale items have been allowed here, as long as it is kept to a dull roar. Donell Wells, HHR, or Rio Grande would be the ones to tell you for sure.

Welcome Mike, Donnell Wells is the owner/administrator; I just did a quick scan of the rules he posted here: atlasrescueforum.proboards.com/thread/1174/forum-rules#ixzz3XmcvUqYbYou can always PM Donnell if you have further questions or need additional guidance about Atlas Rescue Forum policies. I might also suggest HOSwap and/or HOInterchange, which are two Yahoo Email Groups which exist specifically for people to post items for sale, and also to browse listing and contact sellers to buy posted items. You can subscribe by emailing the list and when they add you you can post listing as well as receive mailings of the items listed: hoswap-subscribe@yahoogroups.com hoexchange-subscribe@yahoogroups.com I used both and my experiences have been good so far for the past few years. Cheers, Jim

Mike I found your web site, but no HO listed. Are you selling N scale only? Larry

I would pass entirely on HO Swap or HO Swap Shop, both run by Val Nelson, as the folks on the list are a bunch of whiners who want to buy things at 1980s prices and complain about things they don't even understand.
I left the two lists when it became a big crap storm because I posted some items I also had running as fixed price or best offer eBay listings, which are not auctions and are relatively low visibility compared to an auction, and some imbeciles got the idea they were somehow competing with auction bids to buy the items - this despite the fact the first person to make an actual offer would get the items in question. And I posted the items at reduced prices.
I found it didn't much matter because no one there seemed to be buying anything, anyways, unless you posted it at a fire sale price, and sometimes not even then. I picked up one good customer from one of those lists and other than that couldn't sell anything to anybody. I've no idea why, I work hard to maintain a good reputation (eBay feedback is 100%) and price items fairly.
But then I also found it hard to buy on the same lists, not once but several times by at least four or five sellers I had items sold out from under me because I asked questions on prices or shipping. It amazed me the same people who seemed to think that was just okay were turning around and bitching because I'd posted an item independently on eBay, or that I'd used eBay to set a starting price for an item.
In short it's a jerk parade, unless you like TV soap operas I'd stay far away.
Now if you want to use Scott Whitney's Backshop list, or some of the other lists folks run, you may have better luck with them. Backshop also has the benefit of being all scales.

lvrr, I wouldn't have recommended the yahoo HO lists if I didn't have a good experience myself, which has been the case so far. I've sold most of the HO trains I didn't need during the past 3-4 years and bought a few things as well. I've seen as much complaining about Ebay give or take, maybe more. Bottom line is both are viable ways of buying and selling. There is no perfect way of buying and selling trains but the Yahoo groups lists work fairly well if you follow the simple rules and are patient. Sure, I see people post stuff for near MSRP prices or for prices over MB Klein's prices often, but move on - its that way on Ebay too. Pick and choose. If people offer low ball, just say no thank you and bide your time or switch strategies. Drama or what not is rare; yes I watch both lists almost daily.

I'm just telling you that people who do nothing but complain drove me away from those two specific lists, and the chances of it being a viable outlet to sell much is fairly slim, unless you want to give things away. I didn't appreciate being the obvious target of a rant from the list moderator after I'd posted a few items because a couple guys literally do not understand how an entirely different website works. And just one website - no issues with posting to other lists, no issues with me taking the same items to shows and swaps, just morons with a personal agenda against eBay complaining for the sake of complaining instead of just not buying like usual.
If you want to actually sell the stuff, eBay is the way to go, or take it to a show and do it in person. Like I said, outside of one customer on some new items I sold nothing on that list in over 18 months, at any price.

Mike,
Thanks for emailing the lists. I got them, and I wish you well liquidating the items.
Everyone else,
Not to hijack, but I've had great luck and experienced tremendous satisfaction buying and selling over 100 items on the Yahoo Groups (HOSwap, HOExchange, Backshop, HOBackshop, and the now decommissioned HOInterchange/HOYardsale) over the years. You have to be patient, persistent, and do some emailing to answer questions/pictures, but ZERO commissions and a targeted audience is huge to me. Ebay and their fee structure barely make it worth selling IMHO. I buy and sell modern era HO items and perhaps that is a bigger target audience on these groups, idk. I never, ever gave items away, but I certainly do not treat my items like their gold and everyone else's items are garbage. I've always priced things with what the market seems to bear, keeping in mind I don't have to pay a commission.
There are a few people on this very forum (not the yahoo forums) whom I've emailed directly once (as a gesture of 'you may like this...') who want you to give stuff away when they're purchasing it, but their items are top dollar when they sell. I chose not to deal with those individuals. It's selfish, conceited, and unequitable.

I had bad experiences on those Yahoo Groups. First, by the price structure they expect you to give the stuff away and/or it will take forever to sell. I can sell it on Ebay for more money (net back to me) than those guys will ever pay for stuff, and I can get that money a whole lot faster by not having to wait for many months to sell an item.
Secondly, and more importantly, I got ripped off on a misrepresented brass steam engine that I bought through those Yahoo Groups. Seller took decent photos, but there were hidden electrical issues, and of course there is no buyer protection at all. The model wouldn't run at all. I ended up losing something like 45% of my money on a piece of junk I could not adequately fix.
I'm not a fan of Ebay at all, but I really, really don't like those Yahoo Groups. At least on Ebay I can get paid, get decent money, and sell the stuff fast at reasonable prices.
