Southern Crescent, circa- 1960s thru 1978 era: c2.staticflickr.com/8/7067/6938537816_0f795d649f_b.jpg1. Walthers already has the tooling for several cars used on that train. 2. The Southern Crescent ran well into the Amtrak era, so early Amtrak modelers would have an attractive and popular train to run along with their east coast Amtrak equipment. 3. Walthers has EXCELLENT tooling for the EMD E8, which was the Crescent's primary diesel power. A four unit lash-up in HO and N scale would be quite a sight. PLUS, there are two restored Southern Crescent E-units in existence that can be used for detailing references. For Northeast Corridor running, there are plenty of HO GG1s and *GE E60s on the market. *Long shot thought but this might be a good opportunity for Walthers to produce a DECENT Amtrak E60CP/CH. In spite of the prototypes' problems, they successfully hauled Amtrak's long distance trains into the 90s.

So Walthers is churning out a new passenger train every year? Since I have my CZ cars and I don't think the D&RGW Prospector or other passenger cars will be made in plastic, I don't pay much attention to the passenger train wish list - although it's nice for passenger fans. Maybe that's a good thing because I can't afford them anyway!

Jim, if the Rio Grande's "Prospector" used Pullman-Standard half-fluted streamlined cars originally designed for C&O's "Chessie", remember that Walthers a few years ago did make quite a nice model of the coach. (It's the one that has no window in the middle of one side, where there's a curved corridor inside.) Walthers painted it for the D&RGW, too, but in the five-stripe rather than the one-stripe livery they wore when sold to my favorite railroad, the Delaware & Hudson.
HO Sides for the other car types with stainless fluting only below the windows have been available in both brass and plastic.
I would welcome an HO heavyweight, arched roof baggage car in Illinois Central's classy chocolate and orange like the one made in N scale by Wheels of Time. I'd also love to get a nice HO E8 in the Southern's beautiful green, gold and off-white livery but without lettering so I could letter it for my own road.

Walther's could do a 4 for 1 special with the IC. Either a "City" in IC or ICG or a "Panama" in IC or ICG. I have almost all of the cars already. My only beef with Walthers is that the E units don't match the cars (orange doesn't match) and they never offered an observation other than the heavyweight . JL

BART is about as much a name train as the L in Chicago or the Metro in DC. My wife thinks I get a train fix when I see Metro or similar rail traffic but to me it just isn't the same! Supposedly Walthers was supposed to do a C&O train a year or two ago, where there was maybe going to be one or more car that was an overlap with the Prospector too, but I'm not sure what happened with that or if there were really any passenger cars useful to the Rio Grande modelers beyond the 52 seat chair car. I have two PCC brass Prospector combines so what I need would be the diner and sleeper, and the baggage would be nice too. Otherwise there are the super expensive Division Point brass cars - they look great, cost a fortune and some have reported they had difficulties actually running them.

James, You may be thinking of the "Pere Marquette" ? did any of those cars go anywhere besides B&O ? the "Chessie" car may have been a "Jim Crow " car as built,hence the odd interior. Spikre

Could be, for a guy raised on the west C&O, B&O, Pere Maquette, Chessie is all a blur.
Supposedly the P-S 52 seat coach had a semi divider in the middle to break up the "tunnel effect" as some have described other full lenght seat pasesnger cars. As the story goes, the C&O ordered more passenger cars than they needed after WWII and gave up their production slots to others such as the D&RGW to take over the passenger cars they ended up not needing. D&RGW (from memory) took over 8 char cars, 2 diners, 3 lounges, 4 sleepers, 2 baggage and 2 RPO's in P-S production. One of the 8 chair cars was quickly commandered and rebuilt into Business car 100 aka Wilson McCarthy later Kansas. D&RGW also took over 3 Budd eastern dome-obs and modified the round ends with end doors to allow them to be used in mid-train use.

I've ridden in dome coaches (GN) and regular "tube" coaches (UP 5450's, for one), and I really prefer the feeling of being in a room rather than a tube. And please recall the GN cars were 46 seat cars to the UP's 44 seats. Those dome coaches were the BEST! Ed

the U.P. Dome Diners were the best Diners ever ridden in . too bad there weren't enuff funds for a full 1st class meal. but was a Starving student back then. watching the corn fields fly by at 90per while having a Burger was a real treat. if one didn't get a sort of seasick feeling from the rocking. but guess that could happen in regular 1 level dining cars also ? Beg to differ on the Walthers Proto E8 as being excellent. Maybe "okay" might be a better grade. The roof is still too round making the Farr grilles too narrow. The curvature of the nose is as round as a basketball. The body is too narrow and the partial retooling of a few years ago helped a little but the nose and windshields are still not correct. The new nose door headlight is still not totally correct either and the back door is better but still far from correct. Broadway Limited's E8 at least has a body which is the proper width along with a good nose contour, windshields and roof contour. But its fans are too small and solid like 1970's tooling. The winterization hatch is too narrow, because of the fan debacle. It features only a single steam generator and has no provisions for a dual version. The fuel tank is ugly as it is too wide and has a slot tooled into it to clear the engine room step. The nose door headlight is atrocious and detail is generic one size fits all. Oh, and the back door of the BLI E8/9 is complete garbage. Its height might be fine for HO people 4 feet and shorter. There is no excellent E8/9 on the market. Stand in models is what we have to date.

A correct E8 is soooo overdue, it's unreal ! Where is Athearn Genesis on this one. Geez, what a gold mine, if somebody would do 'em right. The BLI is marginally better looking, but my Para twos top out at 55 SMPH, and won't hit eighty unless you run ridiculous track voltage. I'd be guessing that we'll get some manner of western train next time. Perhaps a RI / Espee train, or mebby the Hiawatha Olympian. A Panama LTD. would be a serious arm twister. I won't get the whole train unless it's really specacular. Who knows??? Maybe Walthers will really splurge someday, and go all out with an Espee Sunset Ltd...with every car being new tools !

It probably will not happen soon so I will retain my Union Pacific Overland units for now. I did purchase the original run of the Santa Fe E8 unit rebuild and they are plated and look OK, but they are not Genesis quality for sure. Larry

Jim, I forgot one other C&O/D&RGW/D&H half-fluted car that Walthers has modeled in HO, unfortunately only painted for C&O/Pere Marquette. I believe the lunch counter / buffet /lounge "Chessie Club" is identical to the D&RGW "Castle Gate" which the D&H bought in 1967 and years later renamed "Champlain". Guilford took it and removed the stainless still fluting; it's still in the Pan Am Railways business train. Unfortunately Walthers doesn't have it in stock. I tried to persuade Walthers to decorate the model for D&RGW and D&H, without success; the Walthers rep I spoke with at the big show in West Springfield, Massachusetts two or three Januaries ago was very discouraging, so I did buy one of the C&O models; I haven't yet repainted it.
At least as of earlier today Walthers had the proper P-S half-fluted 52-seat coaches in C&O / PM paint on special sale for, if I'm remembering right, $47.98 each without lighting, a few dollars more with lighting.

There is a C&O 48 seat diner on Ebay right now, totally different window pattern - the D&RGW Prospector diner has a blank spot in the middle of the car with windows on either side, more or less equal.

What about the other side of the car? Diners aren't symmetrical side to side because of the kitchen. Well, most passenger cars aren't symmetrical side to side for various reasons.

I've got photo's in Jim Eagers book here in front of me and neither side of the P-S Prospector Diners (series 1280-1281) look like the Walthers P-S diner. Here is one side of the P-S diner (2nd car from left) The other side has a door to the right of center and two widely space windows between the door and the triple windows on the left side. I'm looking to see if I can find an image. Someday we might get a pre-war Chief...with killer plastic EA & B units, plus as built Hotevilla and Yampai cars ! See TCY site for the chooch ! In all likelihood, we're more apt to get a Mopac Eagle of some sort...which is OK with me.
