I dare to ask why is Athearn the only one making this? Why not Kato? Exclusive model rights?

I would say rights. But imo the athearn is a lot better than the kato.

I dare to ask why is Athearn the only one making this? Why not Kato? Exclusive model rights? Probably, limited market to begin with, and Amtrak is selling them through their store. U.S. Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs get a percentage, Amtrak too. Now if all Amtrak models had to be bought through their store, maybe I'd be more concerned...

I dare to ask why is Athearn the only one making this? Why not Kato? Exclusive model rights? Hopefully I can shed some light on this question. Kato is making it only in N scale; Athearn in HO. This project was done under license with the US Army Trademark Licensing program, as they own the rights to the service ribbons (and doing the model without those would defeat the purpose). Amtrak commissioned the run, and it made the most sense to work with both model companies by having Kato do it in N and Athearn in HO. This was a bit of a departure from other projects due to it involving the Department of the Army, Amtrak, and two manufacturers. By federal law, licensing fees paid to the U.S. Army for use of its trademarks provide support to the Army Trademark Licensing Program, and net licensing revenue is devoted to U.S. Army Morale, Welfare, and Recreation programs. It's also worthy to mention Amtrak has made a goal to have 25% of new hires be veterans ( jobs.amtrak.com for anyone interested in checking out current openings), which the prototype locomotive and these models supporting this effort. Recently, ACS-64 #642 was painted in a similar veterans scheme and ran its first revenue run today on train 184, so the NEC fans will have something special to look out for as well. That leads me to the next question I've been asked... Will there be a Veteran's ACS-64 model? Someone has to make it first! For now, Kato has announced it in N scale only. For the HO Amtrak Veterans P42 - check out the extra level of detail we added on the closeup shot of the logo! A digital fuel gauge! You can even read how many gallons of fuel are displayed! The HO version will come in individually numbered boxes, making them true collectibles. I guess that means most folks will have to get one to run and one to keep unopened? This project has been a long time in the making with a lot of collaboration between several entities, and so far it is shaping up to be awesome! A big shout out to everyone involved at the DoA, Athearn and Kato. Thanks! Amtrak Matt

Tried to order one but the cart wouldn't take my info. Too early to order, maybe? I placed my order earlier today without a problem. You have to create a customer account and be logged in to place the order - not sure if that's the matter? If it still isn't working, you can always order by phone: 7:00 am to 5:00 pm U.S. Central Time, Monday through Friday. 800-645-1993

even with the large HO Collectors market am going to guess that the N Loco will sell out faster than the HO loco. why ? because more N Gaugers run passenger trains than HO modelers. Spikre

Just placed my order today. I hope the folks in China do a good job assembling these. I had a nightmare with the heritage locos (Phase I) as I had to send two back because there was a huge glob of glue on the nose or a part was missing, etc. Staples did a good job of standing behind the products though as the third time was a charm.
Looking forward to this awesome loco. It's another DCC/Sound upgrade in my ever-expanding queue. What's sweet is I think it has been less than a year since the prototype was introduced and we already have an HO and N scale model forthcoming!
Thanks to Amtrak and all who made this possible!

So, when does someone model the new baggage cars?

?? atsfan, what was wrong with the Old baggage cars ? model railroaders,Never satisfied !! Spikre Nothing, except after 50 years they are being replaced by new ones. So if you Model Amtrak you want one. Or two.

atsfan, Amtrak still has a few years until they've been around for 50 years. don't recall them ordereing baggage cars until they were around a few years. Amfleets with no windows and baggage doors don't count here. Spikre

The new Amtrak Viewliner baggage cars look no more like an Amfleet car than the ex-Santa Fe Budd baggage cars do that have been running since Amtrak started. The first of the new baggage cars is show here next to an Amfleet car: www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=4036316Whether you like these (and Amtrak) or not, it's a significant new prototype and the first new dedicated baggage car Amtrak has purchased. I expect Walthers or Kato will produce them (and the other new Viewliner variants) in the next couple years. Dave

The model will have to be metal plated though. The real ones are shiny.

Are we talking about the same cars? You might just be. If the cars weren't produced within the past week or so, they can't be the "new" ones, right?

The model looks really nice and I just pre-ordered one. Did the most recent run of RTR P42s have operating ditch lights?

The model looks really nice and I just pre-ordered one. Did the most recent run of RTR P42s have operating ditch lights? Thanks guys - I'm glad you like it. I think the last release of Athearn P40/P42s had bulbs for ditch lights, and this one should too. It has the new tooling for the "bolt-on nose" with rounded headlight housing and the two separate windshields. The individually numbered boxes should add a nice touch. I don't remember ever getting so excited over the packaging for any model. Matt
