I'm working on a project involving Reading Company passenger cars. I'm looking for inspiration in existing books on passenger cars that are devoted to one road.
Some questions: Can anyone provide any recommendations? Does anyone have any of the books written by Robert Liljestrand and do you like them?
I'm interested in books that give detailed information (rosters, dates of acquisition, dates of disposition) and books that are picture books.
Thanks, Peter

You will likely need to compile the information from several sources.
The various Pullman Standard Car Library reference books are well done, and Reading should be in one of the volumes.
The Morning Sun Books' Reading Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment contains some information, and other information is likely available from those manufacturers' websites which offer models of actual Reading passenger cars.
Good luck to you.

John,
Thanks for your reply. I guess my question wasn't clear. I'm not looking for books on the Reading. I have most of the information that I think I'll need on the Reading's passenger equipment.
I'm looking for books on other railroads' passenger cars that people think are well done. I'm trying to see how much information I should include, how to lay out the books, etc.
Robert Liljestrand of Bob's Photo has some PRR passenger books, for example. I was wondering if anyone has purchased them and what they think of them.
Thanks, Peter

Peter, have been waiting for Years on the Definative book on Stillwell passenger cars, both Erie and New Haven. there were also Subway/Rapid Transit cars built to Stillwell designs, but they were different looking and shorter,so not really interested in them. Rebuilt Heavyweight Cars: am mainly interested in the Erie and B&O cars, but several other roads added "Picture Windows" and the smooth tapered roofs. can think of NKP and Wabash, but a number of roads had similar cars. If you can find any of the books on the MILW Hiawatha, especially the two put out by Milwaukee Shops, Inc., those would be a good standard to emulate.

Peter, I can recommend an interesting pair of books in Colorado RR Museum Annual series, No. 24 and No.25, by Herbert Danneman. shop.coloradorailroadmuseum.org/SelectSKU.aspx?skuid=1001158shop.coloradorailroadmuseum.org/SelectSKU.aspx?skuid=1001177No. 24, "A Ticket to Toltec," covers Rio Grande narrowgauge passenger ops chronologically from 1871 to 1981, when the Silverton Branch was sold to become the D&S. Year by year, it provides numerous examples of old schedules, pics, consists, etc. No. 25, "Rio Grande Narrow Gauge Varnish," covers all the NG passenger cars, grouped by type. along with references material on furnishings, paint, trucks, etc. Each car is illustrated with pics, floor plans and diagrams, etc. Another almost wholly pictorial reference is from the R. Robb series by the late Robert L. Grandt and company, "Narrow Gauge Pictorial: Passenger Cars of the D&RGW, Volume 2." I always felt it was a little too spare on anything except the pics, but the pair by Danneman resolved that.

Wow...Looks like a ton of stuff on the NH ! I have the little bit presented in NH Power, and the RPC books on Pullman Standard, and Budd. Of late, I've been jumping into AT&SF with both feet, and I'm still looking for a really good book on the Empire Builder! No such thing as too many passenger cars...or books all about them !

Jaygee, I have the TRP book Passenger equipment of the Pennsylvania Railroad Vol One Coaches which I think is good and hope to continue building the set up to cover the other varieties of PRR coaches. James Brodie.
