Jim, the Strongsville Schools here in Ohio went back two weeks ago!! Managed to finish painting and decaling the PC X79 Boxcar that I showed the in progress pictures of. Rail Yard Models kit, painted with Floquil PC Green and Platinum Mist Paints and lettered with kit supplied decals. This car was financed by Kelloggs and leased to the PC for use in hauling cereal from Battle Creek Michigan accross the country. Can put a lot of cereal boxes in a 60' Hi-Cube Boxcar. In the 70's the Rock Island did what a number of financially strapped railroads did. They sold a large part of their 40' Boxcar fleet to Evans, who refurbished the cars and leased them back to the railroad. In this case Evans strengthened the side sills and installed 8' doors in the refurbished cars. I took a Branchline kit, removed the side sill and lower door track, then glued a new side sill in place using Evergreen Plastic with a piece of Evergreen angle stock as reinforcing. Painted the model with a mixture of Floquil PC Green with a few drops of Dark Green, these rapidly faded into the standard PC Green color. Lettered the car with Mask Island decals for this car. Another view of my Bowser C-430's with a Flexivan train at the Strongsville Society of Model Railroad Engineers layout. Thanks for looking! Rick J

I really love the Blue scheme!! Me too... NO SCHOOL in Michigan yet, it's against the law. Can't open school until after the labor day weekend. Might hurt tourism. My Grandkids in AZ have been back to school since the first week of August.

Jim, Outstanding work as is your standard. Hang in there with the move and all ahead of you now. Hoping that you find some peace of mind in your new home -- and a way to continue posting when warranted. Been workin' on the RR here. Track arrived this week to complete several capacity improvements along the line to enhance and facilitate operating. First to see track was the added Rio Grande yard tracks in Silverton that I built the layout edge extension for. They still need to be spiked down, the manual throws installed, and wired together, but look good even without being blended in yet. The siding and spur together add about 16 cars to the yard capacity, nearly doubling it. The four current yard tracks together hold 20 cars (4x 5 cars/each).

Rick, your X79 really came out great, those RYM kits build up so nice! I decide to weather four of my PC&F Evergreen boxcars, these were very common visitors to the Rio Grande via the SP at Ogden, UT. It was very typical to see 5-6 cars of lumber as head end fill on many eastbounds in addition to entire trains. There are a couple door variations and production dates from about '67-'74 so I kept the work pretty light, using colored pencils and chalks, I have another 8-9 SP cars to do as well.

Don't know how to embed a youtube video on here. I thought I did, but anyway. Here's a test run video of the Hawkeye. I wanted to run it and see what I had to fix before I start detailing the cars.

This is the largest production tank car ever built. There were two larger, but they were one offs.

Great looking photo's all. I know PC may have been a mess in real life, but I really enjoy seeing the PC green models. In fact I picked up one of the Walthers Mainline 50' Evans box cars - matches a class pretty well per the photo's in the FallenFlag website.
Mark, those Evergreen PC&F box cars are favorites of mine. If you happen to have the Rio Grande Odyssey DVD's, you'll be able to pick them out in some of the run-by's - very common from what I can tell throughout the 1970's thru the Rockies. I've got a couple each from the dark blue box Genesis run (Landis and Youngstown door type) and one from the original yellow box Genesis series. I do hope Athearn runs more as I would be glad to add a few more since they are very hard to find now.
Cheers, Jim

Mark, those Evergreen PC&F box cars are favorites of mine. Mine too. I've always liked that scheme and wish I could use them in my modeling era. I do plan to have a bunch of those different types of PC&F and FMC box cars in SP and SSW to serve several lumber yards on my future layout. There are three lumber dealers in close proximity in the industrial park I'll be modeling. I plan to have plenty of box cars from the Pacific Northwest as well as East Coast (CSX) cars. Excellent weathering, by the way! Dave

The Evergreen PC&F is a nice scheme but true on the time period. The Evergreen paint, from what I've read, only lasted until about 1979 before being repainted into brown SP when SP re-absorbed the fleet into it's own after the Evergreen arrangement was ended. It may well be the SP version lasted into your time period but I'm not sure: Since I model 1980's, I picked up several of the repaints too like the following: www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG69044I just recently I gleened from a dealer one of the plainer (Cushion Car) versions instead of the Hydracushion logo - he had a couple still stock. He may have one more still. www.athearn.com/Products/Default.aspx?ProdID=ATHG69047The above two (linked) may have lasted well into the 1990's. Cheers, Jim

Thanks Jim and Dave!
I thought I'd try to weather these four together since they're of similar dates, it was a nice, simple process with colored pencils and a little chalk. I have quite a few SP cars to do along with some Atlas Evans 52' cars. I'll be phasing out all of my old Details West 52' cars with these.

Jim, and all the others, thank you for the kind comments on the X79, I had a lot of fun building that model, and a lot of thanks has to go to Nick Molo and his GATC Boxcar kit for me to finally understand how all that brake piping and rodding works after building his kit. Jim, I have done a number of those X72 (Evans) Boxcars, luckily I picked up a bunch of them at the hobby shop in Anchorage, AK that Robbins Rails did for they included the Details West Cushion underframe which makes for a much nicer model, also I made some modifications like removing the cast on ladders and replacing with ladders out of the scrap box to give it a better look! Mark, I need to learn how to get that darkened or slightly faded weathering. Would you recommend the pastel weathering kits like the ones MBK carries? And with chalks, you can clean it off if not satisfied and start over right? Then fix it with a clear coat? I have gotten rid of most of the Details West cars I had as well, and only have maybe 3 left in total; one is a sort stand-in's for this car: And another a stand-in for a WP car: www.wplives.com/archives/freight/boxcars/boxcars50ins/64003.htmlAs well as the D&RGW combination door box car. Otherwise I've been slowly catching up on the Atlas Evans box cars - finally grabbed a pair of Jeld Wen's, and a blue Evans Products logo car to add to a few others like Ogen, Plywood Marketing, Louisiana Pacific etc. Still hunting down a few more at shows etc from past runs. Rick. Yep, that's the one. The separate ladders do improve on it. The Walthers Mainline PC car at least did away with the old super thick stirrups and now has much better thinner ones.

Bob, not sure about the MN&S. I'll have to go through Atlas's archive of past runs to see if they've been rerun. I am trying to pick up the ones that seemed to travel out of the Pacific northwest (Oregon, Washington and northern California) down and across the Rocky mtn bridge route. I'm not sure if MN&S was one of them but. GP and Weyerhauser seemed to be frequently in train.
