It seems like every time someone announces a mystery locomotive this unit gets mentioned. And I have been thinking about it. Now, being there was only one produced, and it ran on one RR (GM&O), would it really sell enough to cover the tooling and production costs? Is GM&O really popular amongst modeler's? Would you buy one?

Honestly, I am pretty sure the vocal dozen on this forum might buy one, if they aren't just being sarcastic when they trot it out as a suggestion. So, you have twelve sales. There is a nice, DCC-equipped one, on one of the other forums I belong to, for sale for $500. It has been for sale a long time...

I doubt if more than 100 would sell, and not the hundreds needed to do it in plastic at a current market price level... Only a few brass ones were done - that was a few years ago and I think most of the schemes are still easy to find... I think it is most often mentioned as just a joke.

I think it is most often mentioned as just a joke. Probably as a response to the myriad of suggestions for a new SD40-2.

If UP owned the only one then yes. If it was a Santa Fe in the Warbonnet paint then yes. If you amortize the tooling by stripping it down and using it as part of a train set on the side then yes. Otherwise likely not.
Just think, thousands of 4-S models in Warbonnet paint circling Christmas trees all over every December 25th.

would buy a Display Kit in S or O Scale if it included the Hercules Prime Mover, Westinghouse Generator, odd 9'6" GSC Type B trucks, Westinghouse 362 or 372 traction Motors, complete cab interior, and opening doors. would prefer O, but S would work as a Shelf kit. guess this would cost about what the General display Kit cost awhile back ? don't really need an HO one, never ran on the Erie, and outside of going over crossovers, didnt It only run on GM&O its whole life ? I've met a person who modeled Mobile (a Family Lines/CSX modeler who unfortunately is no longer with us), but I've never met anybody who modeled Meridian or Jackson...

No doubt I'd buy one if available. My dad was working at Ingalls when the things were built. I worked at Ingalls for several years. All three of my brothers worked there for varying lengths of time, one over 25 years.
I think it is a most interesting looking locomotive. I've got an original photo around here someplace.

I guess I do, belatedly, since I have a brass Ingalls. I painted up a bunch of oxide red Atlas pulpwood racks in GM&O for it to pull.

The unit sort of equates to the standing joke of reporting the football scores for Slippery Rock back in the day.
I'd be more inclined to buy an Alco Black Maria or Baldwin Baby face.

SNIP ...the Ingalls would be THE Perfact Loco for Chuffington. kids should love it,and name it "Marty" for Marty Ingalls, remember Him ? or maybe not ?? Spikre Spikre's put on the Thinking Cap, so has me thinking...' Gotta be able to sell a bunch in China (maybe some in Russia, too.) It could be part of a historic limited edition series. Paint it red, slap a hammer & sickle on the side and call it the "Marx & Ingalls." I honestly tried to make that one work with the Marx Brothers, but it just wouldn't quite stick...

Larry Rumor has it that it was this model that put them out of business. Hopefully, the manufacturers/importers are smart enough to not seriously try to bring one to market. I'd really hate to see more of them go bankrupt or close...

No it would not sell well. Not compared to a GEVO or F unit or SD40-2.

if a Plastic Model was offered in Santa Fe Red War Bonnet it would sell more than models painted for GM&O or Ingalls Demo. may even sell better than a Genesis Quality SD40-2. cant believe no one remembers Marty Ingalls ,,,, whys that ? Spikre

I don't think it left Mobile until the trip to the scrappers. I believe it went fro trade in. A Wikipedia articles says that too, that it went to EMD who offered it to the Illinois train Museum for sale. The museum could not raise the amout asked, it then went to scrap.

Now, what about a 3D-printed one?! I think that would be the eventual next path to market. This may be the eventual path to market for a fair number of relatively unusual items.
