I bought my copy of MR today at my local hobby shop and was reading the list of cars and locos Exactrail plans/wants to make in the future. Several of the freight cars did peak my interest. I did not see any tank cars, double stack cars, or coil cars listed but I may have missed them and might find them after reviewing the list a few more times, and just a note: get out your magnifying glass because you are going to need it! The locos I found on the list were interesting: C30-7, SD40-2, and C36-7. While the C30-7 is back in demand and the C36-7 is welcome and needed but I really can't fathom why they would want to make a SD40-2 ? It is already done by Athearn, Kato, and IM. I can think of several other types of locos that are needed ex: U25C than another SD40-2. As for the freight cars their are quite a few variations of same cars with different doors, etc but overall not a bad list of cars. If you get a chance check out the list and see if a car you want is listed on it.

I, too, bought a copy of MR today, just to see the Exact Rail ad. There is no/no way they are actually planning to produce all of those. I suspect it is mainly a way to get attention - - it obviously worked!

I am sure every manufacturer can show you a list like that of items they would like to do. But a list of items a manufacturer would like to offer and the ones that actually will make money for the Co. are two different things.

I guess they are thinking that if modelers see the car/loco they really want on the list they will email/facebook them about the car and make their decision a bit easier!

I've yet to see the list, but I can't really think of any cars I Really, Really want, except for those neat looking helium cars. Now as far as locos, I can only think of two I want. An updated SW-1 and a C-415.

Only time will tell, but Exactrail will likely do some of the items on their list and some other ones not on their list before they do everything on that list. The only thing for certain, is whatever they do will please some people and some others will find glaring mistakes with the model.
I am surprised they listed the SD40-2 though. It has been done a lot already (BLI also did a couple different versions with sound).

Were there any coal hoppers on the list, by chance?

Were there any coal hoppers on the list, by chance? I took the ad to be nothing but wallpaper and only glanced at it... I'd love to see Exactrail or Tangent do the N&W H-10 hopper, but I don't think either of them have it in their plans. The only potential H-10 is Smokey Mountain Model Works in resin, which is probably a ways off. The thing is, as much as I like resin kits and enjoy building them, I could see buying 40, 50 H-10s if they were RTRs or even styrene kits. I can't see buying and building that many resin kits of a single car type. Heck, I have probably 60 of the Bowser H-11s and have only managed to build half of them. The H-10 is a car anybody east of the Miss. modeling 1960 to 1980 could use in multiple, but if you're not an N&W modeler it's "just another 70 ton hopper" and I imagine more than one manufacturer thinks it's too similar to the already-done BLI H-2 to bother with. For "similar" cars, it's pretty much impossible to kitbash one out of the other, and the H2s were largely out of revenue service by the 70s. Also Bowser bought stewart and inherited three more 70-ton rib-side hoppers - the USRA car, the PRR H-37, and PRR H-39. Athearn has come a long way but doing a strictly eastern prototype probably isn't on their short list. Anyway if anybody spotted the H-10 on Exactrail's wallpaper, let me know. Not that it means they're gonna do it, or do it soon, but it would be interesting to know it even made the cut of 289. Andy

Yes, there are several hoppers mentioned as well as ballast hopper and modern coal gons. The one that comes to mind was an H27. I went over it a few times again and in the heavily darkend area were two more locomotives:
SW1200 and SW1
so you might get your wish for an updated SW-1.
If I get some time I will try and break it down a bit. As said before their are cars with of the same type but with different doors, ends, etc. They do mention a partial waffle boxcar and an elongated waffle boxcar, so their are two more cars of interest.

Remember, we still need a really great SD40-2. We've never gotten one of these yet.

I'm really impressed with them. For a new company, they quality and offerings are much better than I would have expected. I've heard a few complaints, but no company is perfect, and I've also heard that they're addressing those complaints. I have N scale versions of several of their cars, and the detail rivals HO. I do hope they bring out all the units that they say, and I think they'll do their best to honor their statements.

Is their list anywhere else, other than an ad in MR? As I like switchers, an SW-1200 wouldn't hurt my feelings either!!

As said quite a few interesting cars. I have to wonder if some of the NSC Canadian cars are not the former Sylvan molds. I have heard rumor that Exactrail was working on a coil car but as you see it is not listed here as well as no tank cars, double stack cars, or any more gons. Thanks to Ted for breaking the list down!

As I said before... Anybody who believes the June ER ad is simply not thinking about the math.
Even at 12 projects a year - what the BIG guys like Athearn and Atlas even have trouble doing (even in the best of economic times and with a vast dealer network) - those 289 projects will only take a little over 24 YEARS... That's right, OVER 24 YEARS!!!
Here's the other angle you should consider...
What does a company need to do to promote their products when they've just thrown away their entire US dealer network? That's right, they need to get people to their web site and mass e-mail lists... There is no better way to do that than announce an item everybody is interested in, and what you have just likely seen is the hobby's biggest shotgun blast ever trying to cover something each person out there may want - to try to get people to the website... And by the way, each person added to that e-mail list database is another that could be sold off to third parties and potentially make a little side income that way.
And here is another thing to think about... What are the chances of any of them being right if done, as the last car they have released - the Berwick 7327cf boxcar which is in that list - is not correct for that signature car type (the Chessie Berwick 7327)? The new model has the wider end panels of the Berwick 7480 cars that were much less common.

Curt, I'm pretty sure no one here really expects ER to pull much of this off. It would be nice if they managed to get 3 or 4 done each year and one would like to hope and believe, done correctly. As far as their business model and their dealer network, which they've recently abandoned, who really knows how it's all going to shake out. Many a modeler has probably "forgiven" a Mfr. if they brought out a decent facsimilie of something they really, really wanted/coveted. I've not visited their website recently and as I dislike a lot of unwanted e-mail, I seldom sign up for such "new release updates", etc. from anyone. Now that Atlas' Forum is out of service, I'm hoping that this place will be where I can learn the good, the bad and the ugly about things coming down the line. Then I can make the choice to accept the offering(s) or leave 'em on the shelf. It will be interesting to see how things pan out for ER, in the end.

Regardless of the ultimate validity of that list, I have to hand it to FunnelFan for having the patience to compile it out of the ad!

Regardless of the ultimate validity of that list, I have to hand it to FunnelFan for having the patience to compile it out of the ad! Agreed... I started to do it myself the night I saw the ad (when the Atlas forum was still up) but punted after about item 15... Didn't want the list to get caught forever on the first page of the Atlas forum when it shut down. And by the way, somebody else had recently compiled the 1-289 list (posted on TO) and then Ted sorted it by builder... A nice way to look at it... (and laugh)

Many a modeler has probably "forgiven" a Mfr. if they brought out a decent facsimilie of something they really, really wanted/coveted. Yeah I agree... I was on the brink of that when they announced the Berwick 7327 in Chessie... that is until they botched it. If they had just done a correct car body for the 7327 then the C&O Chessie car would be a masterpiece. Instead it is great paint on the wrong body. And the B&O Chessie? I'm still wondering how the weight data could end up so far off on a model after a historical society reportedly gave them the correct data.

FMC 5283's..l really?! IM already redid the athearn BB model. I wonder if the intent would be to do the version with the riveted overhanging roof vs the welded roof ala IM. The PCF version would be cool too.
Did anyone see any 52' models listed in there?
