Football is back! Go Pack! In honor of things with a Wisconsin theme. My friend Bill and I did some mechanical work on the brass OMI as built 1944 version of the Milwaukee Road S-3. The locomotive had a dead short and the boiler weight was bouncing around inside the boiler like an 800 pound gorilla. Upon opening up the model, we found a piece of tape against the cab wall. The leads for the motor on these models is a hair away from the bulkhead detail piece. It would appear this model has had a shorting problem for a long time. Fixed the short by actually getting everything square on the drive and fixed the flopping boiler weight. The boiler weight supplied with this model is the ugliest piece of lead I've ever seen. It looks like it was whittled with butter knife out of a chunk of lead. As Bill said "that is one ugly piece of lumber". He's owned over a hundred brass steamers and never seen such a crude boiler weight. I lubed the gear box and it runs like a top. Now its on to the paint shop for paint. Yes the drivers are in quarter!!!! Yippee!!!!!

Jim, here's hoping that gearbox lasts, I ended up replacing quite a few Dong Jin Gearboxes when I did repairs for a hobby shop. Here are some cars I finished this week: Working on filling out a fleet of NKP cars, this is a Branchline 1944 AAR Boxcar kit with a 7' Door, the NKP was one a few railroads that ordered a 7' door on these cars. Painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and Black Paint then lettered with Microscale Decals. Second Rock Island 60' PS Box Car (Fisher Body Car) that I have done that is in Ternstad Service for General Motors. Car is painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and Floquil Platinum Mist, then was lettered with Mask Island Decals. Thanks for looking! Rick J

Beautiful work, fellows! Had a couple of really helpful ops sessions this week and shook most of the bugs outta the passenger schedule as well as finalized a number of issue with other aspects of operations. The best thing was confirming that running times per the timetable versus the fast clock, etc were about right. I did grab a few pics up on the Cascade Branch along the way. Here's 100/101 climbing out of the Crater Lake Stone quarry. I can rach down in there to uncouple, but found others not so much so need to probably install an uncoupler at the foot of the grade into the quarry. A little later they climbed to Camp 13, testing clearances. Here they are returning to Crater Lake Junction from Camp 13. The track they're on continues down to the quarry after passing through the turnout they are approaching here.

Great looking cars Rick! Here's what's on the bench this week, one is a simple upgrade of an Atlas 52'Evans car, I've added a cut bar, walkways, hoses, Kato trucks and repainted one of the ends to match the prototype. When it's finished I'll post my reference shot too. This is a Cannon & Co. kit that I've been soldiering away on for a couple weeks, it's been a fun, very rewarding model to assemble - the next one will be better! This side of the car is all that's decaled so far, it has a coat of clear gloss over it right now. I'm working from a prototype shot here as well, the finished car will show about 10 years service when I'm done with it.

Scotty nice job on the graffiti. I have never had success hand painting graffiti. I print the actual photo of the graffiti on decal paper and attach it to my model. But your hand painting is very convincing.

TBird I use Folkart acrylic paints from Walmart and a fine tip brush.
Jim Im not that good at it either, I never seam to get the colors just right.

Hang in there, Steve. It gets better. Never been through a divorce, but went through a couple of rough breakups before getting married, so I know part of what you're going through. One day at a time and eventually the days get better and the modeling mojo returns. Here is the GN X-66 bringing up the rear of the SWG as it rolls past Deschutes siding on the SP&S Oregon Trunk.
