I contacted Walthers and asked if the unit was going to have:
1. HEP cooling fans
2. Outside mounted air reservoir
3. Enlarged rear panel
4. Exhaust Stacks
5. Front and rear HEP plugs
6. Modified rear body panels - CNW commuter F's
7. Nose Bell - CNW F's
Here is their reply.Thank you for taking the time to contact Walthers in regards to the CNW 4079C. Thanks for the question! The units are going to be circa 1964 to about 1970/71. We are not offering all the variations mentions below, we will take them as suggestions. Our model is a very good starting point. Some of the smaller items could be fabricated and added to the model by the customer if desired. Photo above (attached) is a good representation of what the model will look like (no spark arrestors though). Units will have: * dual cooling fans in the former DB area, with appropriate, raised, etched metal cover. * dual, offset exhaust stacks on the rear roof panel (where the SG equipment typically goes). These are straight wire, not castings, and not the "glass pack" mufflers of later years. * external, nose mounted MU receptacle * pilot mounted MU hoses. NOTE: the extended HEP receptacles on front pilot and rear end sheet are not modeled. * cutback skirts. * appropriate side and roof grab irons, plus toe board walkways installed. * ATS Shoe *appropriate journal details Hope this helps! If you have any questions please feel free to contact us at custserv@walthers.com Thank you for choosing Walthers for your modeling needs. Sincerely, Amy G. Consumer Sales & Service Rep Wm. K. Jim: Thanks for the info, I was thinking about getting a CNW unit, I have some C&NW Bi-levels. But given the level of Detail, I might was well get a Highliner shell and detail it.

Jim: Thanks for the info, I was thinking about getting a CNW unit, I have some C&NW Bi-levels. But given the level of Detail, I might was well get a Highliner shell and detail it. Bill All Walthers is doing is dropping the dual fan HEP radiator fans in the dynamic brake panel and stuffing a couple of pieces of wire on the back to represent the exhaust. Repeat after me....whoopi ding! Chicago commuter units are heavily modified and you nearly have to tool up a separate shell for each road. Rock Island is similar to CNW, but there are still big differences. I'll be interested in how well these sell, since some of the big spotting features of the CNW unit will not be incorporated. For CNW fans you are spending good money on a model that falls well short. If you are thinking about buying the Walthers F then making the necessary changes, why? The Proto F is well short of the Genesis/Highliner body in detail fidelity, so why spend the time and money. I speak from experience as I've built Chicago commuter units from both Intermountain and Highliner shells. The Highliner no matter what the road looks so much better than the Intermountain.

CNW commuter trains are rather far out of my modeling focus, but every once and a while I have the urge to get one. So far I haven't acted on it, but if I did, I wouldn't be spending too much effort on it. From that perspective, I think these might be rather nice, since they should be more accurate than the generic non-HEP units I'd probably go for otherwise.
That said, if my focus did actually include these engines, I'd probably go with a Highliner build.

Seeing as how Walthers released the GP60s with dummy ditch lights instead of lit ones yet charging $299.95 MSRP, and how their new hoppers in the Platinum line have thinner but still not see-thru roofwalks does not surprise me that Walthers would cut corners, half a$$ the detail upgrades, and jack up the price.
Walthers seems to be behind the times.

Jim: I agree, I would not do a F unit model out of anything but a Highliner shell, or a Genesis F. I dumped all of my Stewart shells, kept a few powered chassis's though for future projects. I was really disappointed as I wanted an already done C&NW unit to go with the cars I had. But someday I will get around to bashing one.
