In 1994 when the KATO Dash 9's came out, I purchased eight of the Santa Fe locos and detailed four with as much detail as I could add at that time. The original Dash 9's for the Santa Fe had the Phase 1 trucks and all have been replaced twenty some years later, but they are correct for the first five to six years of use on the Santa Fe. At that time, I was just trying to add sufficient detail to make them look the same as an Overland Dash 9 I had purchased. I am looking forward to the MTH models if they are nice and might add one or two of those to the Warbonnets of the past. Larry

I miss how good these used to look. Your models do a great job representing the prototype.

Nice job on the air conditioner, that little detail Kato left off always annoyed me, from what I heard Kato left it off because the unit they measured off on, was a ex demo and came sans air.... I think it was one of the first CNW's C-44s

I think it was one of the first CNW's C-44s Thanks. After I detailed these units, I sold the Overland which needed a lot of the piping and other details. That is the information on the model that I heard. It is too bad they did not include an air conditioner option. I got my AC from the Athearn parts and cut them out and filed down the back side to glue them on the KATO. Some of the AC filters were vertical and other units had the horizontal filters. Larry

Very nice looking models!
I bet all three of them look great together doing what locomotives are built to do.

I have several more that are not pictured and a brace of the Atlas Dash 8-CW to got with them. The Atlas units all have sound but I never installed sound in the Kato units. They certainly look great running four or five units like the Santa Fe used them on large stack trains. Larry

Nice looking models. When I looked at the MTH Dash 9 version it was very impressive. I wonder how it will stand out next to these models you did. I am really looking forward to the UP Dash 9

Nice looking models. When I looked at the MTH Dash 9 version it was very impressive. I wonder how it will stand out next to these models you did. I am really looking forward to the UP Dash 9 Big Al I think the new model will look very nice. I purchased the KATO Union Pacific version also and modified it to have the phase II trucks. The Kato model was not correct for the Union Pacific for the trucks or the missing AC unit, but the sand filler was correct. Recently, I was taking pictures of trains and I noticed a Union Pacific Dash 9 with the old trucks and after tracing the road number, realized it was one of the first batches of the C&NW units now painted into Union Pacific colors. The second batch of C&NW Dash 9's had the newer trucks on them when new. I doubt MTH will offer the early numbers for the C&NW if they offer the C&NW since that would require removing the AC and tooling up the 1st phase trucks. I think the new Dash 9 will be very nice and maybe just a little better in some areas compared to the Kato. The first run Kato had the sand filler on the long hood in the middle and the Santa Fe opted for the top filler which holds more sand. The Kato offered the Non AC version based on an early prototype. I added the AC unit and worked to fill the long hood sand cover and moved it to the top, but I noticed the MTH had it there already. I doubt they will add all of the piping below the walkways, but if I purchase some of the new ones, I will add some detail like that to the MTH also. Larry

Ok, i have also heavily detailed my Kato ATSF Dash 9. Lot of Details West parts, smokey valley handrail stanchions, self bended Handrails and Details West air conditioner. I replaced the cast on grill with a grill from the BLMA GP35 n-scale fan set. It works great. I reworked also the original Kato trucks to the pPhase II trucks.

Excellent work and your weathering is realistic and enhances the model. I did not weather any of mine since we were in a rental between houses at the time in 1995 that I detailed the units. One unit still does not have the numbers on it and probably never will. At my age, the modern diesels are not a priority any longer but I still enjoy them. I have concentrated on the steam era again and will continue to work on those for now. The Santa Fe Warbonnet paint scheme got me into the modern era in the mid nineties and those units were beautiful when new and looked good for several years. Your unit look very nice and I like the weathering. The Santa Fe ran the phase I trucks for several years and mine represent those years. I noticed the sand filler on your unit is still in the original position and not on top. it is a pain to fill in the long hood filler and install the sand cap. In 1995, Details West did not offer the AC unit. Certain units had horizontal and some had vertical type inlets on the AC unit. I think more than one vendor made the AC unit for GE. Thanks for sharing your nice models and your additional parts are excellent. I wonder why we do not get others to share their work. Larry

Thanks a lot. Do you mean the rear sand filler. I replaced it:
