Hey ARFers (ARF referring to Atlas Rescue Forum),
I have just uploaded the review of Soundtraxx's Econami. This decoder is about 20 ish dollars cheaper than the tsunami decoders. The hobby is trending towards cutting prices which is good, I would like to see more of that from the companies out there.

James....nice overview of the new Soundtraxx decoder.
Just curious, what did you use for a speaker in the CSX loco?
Thanks. Bob

Curious as to why you selected an Athearn RTR that requires more juice to start than just about anything on the market to show it's improved low speed capabilities?? I've never seen one installed with a RTR/blue box motor so to me it's like comparing apples to oranges. Am I the only one guessing if that is going that fast on step 1 in a RTR unit, then a Genesis or similar would be scooting right along just the same as before??

I would think that, due to the price points, that the eco decoders would pair well with rtr and lower priced engines, simply due to price.

James, thanks for your review.
Although listening through desktop computer speakers poses limits to the quality of what we hear, imho, the turbo charged EMD prime mover sounds good.
However, imho, at time index 09:45 (Nathan K5LLA), time index 10:54 (Nathan P5), and at time index 11:48 (Leslie S3L) those horns sound distorted. Perhaps it's my aging ears. To be fair, maybe the volume being turned up may be a factor, I don't know.
Have you tested the horns at a lower volume and noticed a difference?

Hook up the decoder to conventional speakers (roughly same ohms) to get an idea if it's decoder distortion or speaker distortion. Even something inexpensive like this will give a much better indication of what a decoder is capable of: www.amazon.com/JBL-Loft-Two-Way-Bookshelf-Loudspeaker/dp/B00DKPJR06Run a couple feet of wire from a loco with the shell off to the speaker to hear the difference. Rolling Thunder does the same, but sends the low frequencies only. Would make a good decoder shootout: run em all through the same external speaker.
