I'll be there. I was in York yesterday, and a few dealers were missing due to the scheduling overlap.

Spikre--
I'm not expecting to see that much brass, or not like in the past at Timonium. Howard had told me when I visited that maybe only 3 dealers there have brass now.
Have to replenish my cash anyway. Buying one brass engine is nearly my future train budget for the whole year...and now I owe the wife because I promised her an equal amount of cash (to avoid getting wacked--lol--bada bing). Rewarded myself for getting a much better job...but still don't have much disposable cash (must pay for pitching lessons for my son with a pro, etc.).
I said "if it's the last brass engine I ever buy, I want to get something really good from Howard", so I did.
Now my youngest son thinks we should get one of the shiny unpainted brass engines and leave it that way and run it and enjoy it. I guess in the past there were collectors who did just that--didn't bother to ever get them painted...it's just not what I normally do. (Sunset actually painted many gold satin over the brass, to keep that "new" look).
I'm looking for specific books on steam power, and I hope Ron's Books brought some WP stuff with them, otherwise the NP Supersteam Era book might be a candidate. I'm also looking for good heavyweight passenger cars like the former Branchline sleepers.

Does Tom's Trains from CT attend this show?

Perhaps sometimes he has. Seems like a familiar name to me.

Tom's Trains used to attend Timo shows, but has stopped due to the distance and other personal reasons... It takes a lot of effort for two people to pack a truck and go to a show 6 hours away, do the show, then pack up and go back... Tough even in the best of weather and health.
I'll be at the show tomorrow...

The PRRT&HS was there today. Seemed the busiest in the past year. Slow start, but steady traffic from 10 until about 3.
Still a lot of old stock on dealer tables. Found a bin of Classic Metal Works vehicles for $7 that were $17 elsewhere!
Best buy of the show was a dealer just inside the doors to the right. They were selling off an estate. Tons of ready-to-run cars in their boxes with metal wheels and Kadee couplers -- Branchline $12 each, InterMountain and Red Caboose for $15. They also had cars from Atlas, MTH, and Kadee. Proto blue box locos for $45. These tables were busy all day.
Absent -- Scenic Express, Bar Mills Models, Greenway, Kim's Trains, Bob's Photo.
New food vendor. Not as good as previous, but not bad.

I ended up going to the show to afternoon, kind of a last minute decision. I was giving my mom a ride home from the airport anyway, so I was in the neighborhood... The main reason I went was to look for paint to match a couple box car detailing projects I'm working on. Of course, I didn't find any paint and ended up browsing. The demise of Floquil and Pollyscale really makes it difficult to just grab some paint when you need it. There was one dealer selling Tru-Color, but I wasn't sure which of the dozen shades of box car red to choose from, so I passed on those. Overall, I enjoyed the show, having not been there in over a year, but I wasn't really looking for bargains on lots of models like I used to. I noticed that several of the regular dealers were missing, and while there were decent deals on a lot of stuff, there was nothing I needed for the most part. I picked up one Spring Mills Depot PD 3000 covered hopper (I'd been itching to buy another after getting two initially) and an undecorated Walthers SW-1 (nice to see you, Randy!). Other than that, I bought a few new books, which are always nice to pick up in person. Whatever you may say about the state of the hobby, I'm amazing how many railroad-related books (Morning Sun, etc) are still being published. There were dozens of new books I hadn't even heard about before the show.
I enjoyed catching up with the guys from Spring Mills again. They're frustrated that they haven't been able to produce the I-5 caboose yet, but it's turned out to be a much bigger project than they initially expected. I know it will be awesome when it arrives (should be next year). They have about 8 more models planned for the future if all goes well, and it's good to see that they're still motivated and going strong. I almost splurged on a second PD 3000 to help them out!
I didn't see a lot of recent releases, like MTH Dash 9s or Athearn Genesis GP40-2s, but I would have gone to Klein's if I was looking for newer stuff. I meant to head over there after the show, but I had to get home. I'll probably hit the local hobby shop in Northern VA to look for some military model paints to fit my needs.

Too bad about the new vendor. I really enjoyed the spicey clam bisque for lunch. Didn't make it this time...but will be there for the winter show in Feb. !

There is quite a difference between the people who will be bringing their same old stock for the next ten years and the people trying to unload/move product. I was able to pick up 13 MDC, Robin's Rails, and E&B Valley kits for $30. Now I can teach my two young sons how to assemble, paint and decal without breaking the bank. If they accomplish that, they'll be plenty of $5 Intermountain kits next time. Then there's the $3 Roller Bearing Models, Ambroid, and Quality Craft kits for the adventurous. My boys have learned how to forage for bargains (assembled Walthers tank cars for half the price of kits? Good deal.) Bigger news is Northern Central Supply is retiring/going out of business. They've been at Timonium for as long as I can remember. Everything is 50% off. Owner says he'll be back one last time in February. If you need Walthers cars, or decals, you're set.

As usual, lots and lots of older Athearn, MDC, Walthers, Proto 2000, Accurail etc. kits and some built up too. I continually read about people unhappy that those things aren't being produced by companies but at Timonium, plenty and more.
Being on a limited budget, I didn't go crazy but certainly there were lots of nice rolling stock items you could pick up for around $12 to 15 each, even nicely weathered Intermountain box cars for $15. The going out of business vendor in the left back corner was still there and still has quite a bit of items. I picked up an Atlas CF4650 WP covered hopper $12, a Walthers Silver Series SP wood caboose to go with the Cab Forward for $16. Also picked up a nice 40' weathered IMR ATSF box car for $15. Just tons and tons of bargains for deep discount prices. My wife and I went over to MBK also and I picked up an Athearn MILW yellow Berwick 60' box car and some plastic I-beam stock to make steel beam loads for flat cars.
As others mentioned there were vendors at the front door selling off an estate - a brother had passed away and it looked like more than most well stocked hobby shops for sale - but the vast majority was C&O and B&O rolling stock but it was selling well. Another small table inside the door was doing the same - selling lots of NIB stuff for deep discount. I imagine they were diverting a lot of business away from the vendors with new stock - with all the deep discounts you could really stock up on a lot of nice rolling stock for cheap. Being a western guy, the choices of what I might like are fairly limited at Timonium, but if I were an eastern guy, I'd be like a pig in poop yesterday! Good show, lots of great deals.
I also enjoyed visiting and chatting at the layouts in the north hall; several SP fans to talk to one guy had a 60 PFE ice car reefer train and double head Intermountain Cab Forwards. His were a 1st run and 2nd run retrofitted with newer motors and Lok Sound -ran well and fun to watch. There was a Daylight train, an Athearn SP MT4 was running too, lots of articulateds - NW, etc. The other layout with the nice scenery didn't have hardly any trains running when I was back there at the time I looked.

Is that the dealer in the far back left (southwest) corner with the table of Microscale decals in wooden boxes? I've seen them a number of times but normally pass through quickly because his prices were a little higher than others. I was in a hurry to leave and didn't realize they were 50% off. Most of their stuff was in the category of things I might want but don't "need," but I probably would have bought a few things. I'll have to see what they have left in February. Dave

Must be Northern Central Supply was where I picked up three cars at half off including the Walthers Silver SP wood caboose. Yes, it didn't seem obvious this time that they were 50% - previous shows they had more signs IIRC, this time only one sign and I had to ask to make sure before I went back and picked out several items. My wife even had to tell a couple other shoppers, yes, 50% off. They probably could have sold more stuff if they had signed it better IMO getting more people in to browse.
The base prices are a little higher which is probably why there is so much stock, but this show and the previous two shows last summer and winter they have been at the half off going out of business status. They have tons of Athearn blue box, and tons of Walthers stuff, and a decent amount of Atlas and a few others so definitely worth looking through - but it does take time since you have to scan the ends of the boxes and read them all to find your treasures. I had the wood C-30-1 SP caboose on my list since the Cab Forward needs one, so I managed to find three there, but I was also looking for the right Southern Pacific lettering - and luckily they had one with the all caps letter version. If they are there in February, likely they will still have a decent amount of stuff to look through. I was surprised how much stuff they still had with 3 shows already at 50% off. But also with the estate sales with deep discounts, that drew a lot of attention and money that might have gone elsewhere.

Northern Central needs a large pink or orange sign saying 50% off; all they did was write on magic marker. He said after 40 years of being in business, his next show was it. If someone wanted to make a nice offer for everything, there could be a POD in your driveway!
While the show has spread dealer tables out more, the consignment deal at the front entrance did clog up traffic. Besides the boxed stuff, they had trays of unboxed cars that were selling as fast as they could refill the trays.

We arrived a little after 10 am this morning and did not experience any traffic clogging at the entrance.
The show was nice. My bargain was a gentleman who had detailed and weathered some freight cars for himself and did a really outstanding job--much better than some places who charge for weathering stuff. He had too many of his own cars and was just selling some excess. I only bought two, but then came home and immediately put a bunch of shiny freight cars on Evilbay--and I have the gentleman's contact information to be able to get more weathered steam era freight cars from him.
His work was very good and his prices were reasonable--about the same as the new MSRP for Kadee boxcars. Some were custom assembled, painted, lettered, and weathered Tichy kits. I was happy to pick up a nice Tichy Western Pacific reefer from him that has brass stirrup steps, etc. so it will actually hold up. I was thrilled.
I don't need a lot of rolling stock, and will use this opportunity to replace my shiny new looking rolling stock with more suitable steam era stuff.

I was there Saturday with a table and back on Sunday to shop. I did well selling and finally got rid of some persistent items. On Saturday I found the announcements for folks to meet at the front door interesting. None were for a real person and ranged from Jack Daniel's to Oma Desala. There were lots of folks selling off their own stuff or estates. Their prices were very good for the most part. I stopped at Northern Central for decals and found plenty of sets that are out of print and at half price were a great deal.

I confess I've never heard of Oma Desala, that would have gone over my head. I did happen to hear a PA announcement for Juan Valdez, and commented to my wife about it. She grew up in England and didn't see the same coffee commercials on TV so it was lost on her. It kind of reminded me of restaurants that I'd gone to where people gave names of famous people when they were called for their table by the front desk - Phil Collins and the like. Funny thing is, there are often average people who just happen to have the same names as famous people - there is a David Gates where I work, for example -and I've seen other names like that.

When I worked for High Voltage Systems back in the 1970's we had J. Lennon, R. Starr, P. McCartney and G. Harrison on the payroll, and they were all on the same line crew!

Yes, I forgot about Juan Valdez. I think Jack Daniel's was paged before the show opened to the public. Whoever was requesting the pages was digging deep with Oma DeSala, had to be a knowledgeable Stargate fan. stargate.wikia.com/wiki/Oma_Desala

Why can't you guys keep with the topic of the post? The topic is about the Timonium show this past weekend. Posting about what happened there are therefore keeping with the topic. A show is more than items on the tables. The experiences in and around them are the actual interesting parts !

Just remembered something I've probably been supressing; Who thought the green carpeting under the urinals in the bathroom was a good idea? There was a strip of carpeting about 4'x8' under the urinals. Can't imagine why it was there or who got the nasty job of removing it.
