First, I'd like to apologize for my horrendous photography........ During the mid-70's to early 80's one of Union Pacific's favorite motive power lash-ups were two DDA40X's serving as bookends and a "Fast Forty" SD40-2M or dash 2 H in the middle. Because of the extreme length of the models its difficult to get good photos. The DDA40X's are Genesis models and the SD40-2 116" nose snoot is an Athearn RTR.

Looks like you've got your work cut out for you. You're going to need a quart of Armor yellow to paint all that.

It was fun reading up on the UP sandwiches - apparently the DDA40X's would load up and accelerate quickly and drag the SD40's they were mu'd with. If I had spare 600 or 700 it would be fun to make UP sandwitch but wow, yeah, the space you'd need just for the power set alone!

The DD40's were geared for 90mph operation. The SD40's were geared for normal freight operation 60-70mph. The fast 40's were regeared to 90mph gearing, same as Centennials and renumbered from the 3000 series to 8000 series. Some of the consists UP put together were unique to the UP, due to such models as the U50's, DD35's SD24B units and on and on. I would love to see a DD35A and especially B. The DD35B's were a favorite partner with the U50's. Living where I do, I had the pleasure of seeing many of these creations, including the Turbines. It was hard not to become a UP addict.

The only SD40-2s renumbered(and regeared)from the 3000 series to the 8000 series were 8000-8034 (3240-3274)and were identified as SD40-2Hs by UP. 8035-8099 came from EMD as high-speed units and were identfied as SD40-2Ms by UP. Also 8000-8002 had 81" noses and 8075-8099 had 88" noses. All others had 116" noses.

I was making a general statement only about the 8000 numbers vs the 3000 to differentiate the gearing and pairing with the 6900's. One could never accuse the UP of not having enough HP on the front end.

Jim I forgot to ask how well the SD40-2 runs with the two 6900 units? Did you have to match the speed tables or are they fairly close in speed to each other. Thanks Larry

Thanks Larry The two DDA40X's are factory sound models. The SD40-2 has a Digitrax DH163D decoder, which will be replaced with a Tsunami model GN1000 645 Turbo decoder when I finish the locomotive. I don't know how to speed match, which means I didn't do anything to match up the three unit. Right now all three play very nicely with each other. Once the dash 2 gets its Tsunami we'll see if the three stay good friends. But as of right now, straight out the box is good for all three.

Now do a Double Triple Oreo, (wafer, double stuf, wafer, double stuf, wafer which would equate to DDA40X, SD40-2, SD40-2, DDA40X, SD40-2, SD40-2, DDA40X)

Wouldn't a double stuf have the DDA40X on the middle?
