FYI. Those photos on MBK site are the photoshopped photos MTH had on their web site many weeks ago... MBK has had the MTH Santa Fe Dash 9s in stock for more than a week now... Whether they have plows is a different question. MBK has gotten a restock on several of the NS, BNSF, UP and ATSF ones and they don't seem to be selling as fast now.

The picture on the MBK web site shows the SF Dash 9 to have the correct front side windows and the five step instead of the new 6 step. That is all good but as built, they need the Phase I trucks and the single hand rail on the nose instead of the two piece version Only the 650 to 699 had the phase II trucks and split handrail. I was not able to see the other side but it probably has the AC/ unit. The 600 to 649 run several years without any upgrades to those features. I did notice there was missing the major pipe detail under the walkways except the air dryer and one other detail. It is probably as good as it gets for MTH/ Larry

I am not counting the Athearn RTR model. I have Kato; these are on the way.

Being Kato patterned theirs after a C&NW order, I would go with the MTH. I have a pair of NS and I'm very pleased with them.

OMG, the Friggin plows are in the box. I have sold many,UP & Santa Fe units not 1 has been missing the plow. Not installed on the loco but IN THE BOX. If people would pay attention when the open thing they would see it and not loose it. Steeltiger, before making such claims you should probably contact one or more of the dealers who received NS and BNSF non-sound units that were indeed missing the plows in every single one of them. Everybody knows that they are supposed to be on the box and not factory installed. At the Timonium show last month one dealer had 20+ MTH HO Dash 9 units out on display. Every sound equipped MTH HO Dash 9 unit had the plows. Every DCC-ready non-sound MTH HO Dash 9 unit was missing them (including a non-flag UP). I bought a non-sound NS MTH Dash 9 unit from a dealer in Canada. Before shipping I had him check for the plow and every non-sound unit he had was missing the plows (nowhere to be found in the not-previously opened boxes). MTH is aware of the issue and supposedly has the missing ones to send out when they are requested. My two plows (one for BNSF and one for NS) are supposedly in the mail... PS. Larry, I also wondered why they elected to do Santa Fe 620-629 numbered units instead of doing numbers in the 650-699 range that better matched their model.

I will keep my Kato models since I installed many hours of detail on those, but will look at these closely if they offer it in the 60 to 699 numbers. I know they will run well since most MTH models do run great and it is the best one to come along in a long long time. The sad thing is the BNSF is rebuilding the 600 series into AC 4's or whatever they call them and they are now being repainted into orange orange and more orange. I have emailed BNSF with a suggestion, but I have received no response about painting at least one the red and silver as a Heritage unit. Larry

Why would you have a unit shipped from Canada knowing the plow was missing? Are the prices from Canada less than in the USA (MBKliens for example) ?

LOL... At the time I used Buy It Now on eBay I didn't know the plow was missing (I didn't find that out until I asked dealer to check the next day - after I found my BNSF Dash 9 had arrived without one). MBK was sold out of all NS non-sound at the time, the Canadian dealer's price was cheaper ($145) and I was already getting several freight cars (auction bargains) from him.

I guess the claim here that NS engines "dont sell" may not be correct...... :-)

Hey All Can someone shoot a the rear truck of the D9s? Didnt santa fe and cnw have that massive buldge on the earlier trucks? Thanks Rob

Thanks Rob
All of the first production Dash 9's had that rounded truck design. By the time the Union Pacific units were made, that design was phased out. The first 35 CNW also had this truck design. There may a few others that were delivered prior to the changes.
The first fifty Santa Fe units were delivered with the Phase I trucks as I pointed out some time ago. The second group numbers 650 to 699 all had the later trucks with the flat looking side frame instead of this version which was rounded. Today, most of the original phase I trucks have been replaced with the later versions. Some of the old CNW units that have been painted into UP colors still have that phase I truck. I noticed one recently. Only the Dash 9 models every used this truck. All of the AC4400 had the phase II trucks since the AC version production followed a few months later. Interesting picture.
You can also spot some other changes that occurred in production starting with number 650 for the Santa Fe units in this picture. Nice picture. I got to see them and take pictures of the 648 on its first trip. The Red and Silver paint scheme know as the Warbonnet paint if really super sharp. I model other railroads but these Santa Fe Warbonnes are in my opinion, the best scheme for diesels. Remember, I said in my opinion.

If you get your Santa Fe Dash 9 and have time to post some pictures, we would appreciate seeing it. Overall, it should be better in detail than the KATO model since the AC and updated trucks along with the later handrail on the nose is correct for the second series. I believe the top sand filler on the long hood is correct also, which KATO missed on their model. Thanks Larry

But the MTH units are overall better in my opinion. Kato needs to update and refresh theirs but they dont seem interested. I wish MTH sound was better. After hearing Loksound the difference is clear.

Thanks. I agree the KATO units are very nice especially when you consider they were new back in 1994. Being a steam fan, For a twenty year old model, they are still solid detailed units. Mine got the super detailed treatment updating the piping and the AC along with many other added details. I expected the new MTH units to be better overall since the technology has improved greatly over the last twenty years for plastic models. KATO will probably not update their model but they did offer the new style trucks on their AC model?? Larry

Kato actually did update the last couple of runs of SP and UP C44-9W's. Over the previous versions, (and this is only off of the top of my head), they have later phase trucks, thinner handrails, frame details and speaker housing similar to the AC4400 models, all parts factory applied, AC unit detail, improved painting and lettering and they're available with an optional ESU Loksound sound decoder installed. www.katousa.com/HO/C44-9W/index.htmlIn full disclosure, I work for Kato and may or may not have had my hands in there somewhere. Hope this helps! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com

Hope this helps! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.comThanks Kelley I was thinking that the Kato units were upgraded after I wrote the post and I appreciate your reply to confirm the facts. I purchased eight or nine of the original Santa Fe Dash 9's and detailed four of them back in the 1995 era. They are still as great looking as when they were new and run very well even now. They set a new standard back in 1994 at least in my thoughts about plastic models at that time. If you worked on the upgrades, I appreciate that work. The one detail that the original Kato had that might not have been corrected was the long hood sand filler. The sand filler on the first run had the standard sand filler on the rear of the long hood about halfway up. The Santa Fe units should have the sand filler on top as they were the extra capacity type. The early CNW units that Kato modeled did not have AC or the extra sand capacity. I did not purchase any of the later runs since I like them as new and not modified with the new trucks which happened later on. The pictures below show some of the detail that was added. I sold my Overland models when I finished two of these and detailed two more with piping and details. Larry

I actually luck out because I model CNW among other things, so the body is what I'm looking for. I built up a couple of 'as delieverd' versions of 8646 and 8701 recently for myself using the old shells (I did use AC4400 frames because it makes dropping in sound stupidly simple plus you get the frame rail). Enjoy! Kelley. www.dufordmodelworks.com(slightly updated for the first time in...years? )
