With the Big Guys coming out to play in April, it's time to have a closer look at the Athearn RTR "Little Sister" 4500HP machines. I got mine without DCC and sound enhancements, so I gotta start from scratch here. What says the hive mind on the best DCC / sound rig available today for this application?? An easy fit will be a plus here as well. All four of mine have the 22C fuel tender...so I suppose a speaker could find it's way into there as well. Thanks !

How would it sound in comparison to the version Scale Trains is doing ? If it is similar / same, Loksound will probably be offering the turbine file used by Scale Trains as a download in their OEM section.
That being said, Loksound probably won't post it ahead of the actual release of Scale Train's engine ....

I used the GTEL turbine sound decoder from Soundtraxx.

SoundTraxx...eh ! Does this chip give you the pony motor sound along with the Turbine itself? Since the chooch has provision for two speakers, I'll look to accomplish just that. If you're going to have Turbine, ya better have noise !

jaygee, The Soundtraxx TSU1000 GETL turbine decoder has the diesel motor. I installed this decoder in both Athearn turbines with the speakers located in the turbines. Not the easiest to do, particularly with the limited space in the veranda. I had to do some mods to the interior and deleted the entire Athearn board systems in both locos. I used Ulrich resistor boards and LEDs. Added working red and white gyralights and I lit the numberboards with LEDS off the headlight. There are several on-line how-to's for these locos.

I installed a QSI Titan turbine decoder in my Veranda #71 and am very pleased with the sound. It has a fine sounding diesel sound and turbine start sound procedure. It's been a couple years but I don't remember any serious issues in installing it or getting it up and running. If I recall there are speaker locations in the frame for the Veranda. One, or more, of the new Sugar Cube speakers might be a good thing, too.

QSI would probably be a good choice as I recall most of their sound files sounded either like jet engines or space ships ! Mark.
