I have a couple Cotton Belt cabooses I need to paint. Both are extended vision cabooses, but I will be painting one in the mineral red and daylight orange scheme and the other in the caboose red scheme with mineral red/brown underframe. Is there a Model Master enamel equivalent for the mineral red paint or is there a recipe to get close? Also, is the red/brown color used on the underframe of the red cabooses the same color as the carbody of the mineral red/daylight orange cabooses?

Yesterday, I was a guest lecturer at a Cal State Northridge graduate course. Since I was nearby, I drove over to Smith Brothers Hobby Shop on Reseda Boulevard. They carry the Tru-color paint line. They had the SP Daylight Orange and Red. You can download paint color charts at trucolorpaint.com/color-charts/ They recommend TCP color #211, Freight Car Red, for rolling stock for the period 1937-1960's. I purchased a couple of bottles of the Daylight colors and the cost was $5.45 per bottle for a 1 fl. oz. bottle. I hope this helps.

Tru-Color had a mind-boggling selection of freight car red / brown paints - there must be 40+ different railroads' colors represented. I'd like '90s NS and '70s / '80s SP and SOU, but it's difficult to choose from all the colors in their line without seeing actual test samples of the colors. I'm really not complaining - they have a great selection that is continuing to grow, but I would love some recommendations for those particular colors.

Unfortunately no hobby shop near me carries Tru Color paints, but Model Master paints are widely available at my LHS (which specializes in military and RC cars/aircraft). Since these are the paints I can get, this is what I have standardized my paint colors with. Anyway, I played around and came up with 2 parts MM Rotbraun and 1 part Burnt Umber to get very close to the color used on my Genesis Cotton Belt caboose.

The Tru Color paints are available on-line. But ut is good to know that you got a decent result with Model Master Paints.
