would any ri fans on here ever recall seeing a group of black covered hoppers some lettered for laverty elevator on the indianola ia branch? they would have been 50 to 70 ton and friction bearings, looked alot like small carbon black cars.

I was born in '65 and grew up in Indianola. I do recall those hoppers being in Indianola at least once but the memory is a little hazy. As I recall they were black as you say, and had very large white lettering "LAVERTY" on the sides. I have a vague memory that they didn't get to Indianola much. That Laverty also had an elevator in the KC area at that time and that those cars were mostly running between KC and he Texas gulf. I'm not really sure if that's accurate or just my imagination.

thank you, both, for the responses, and the photo. i remember they had a block of these cars, at least 8, maybe a dozen. the photo has the right look, but i dont remember the rib running along the bottom side. the lettering is too large also. only 4 or 5 of the cars that haunted indianola, were lettered, and that was much smaller, maybe 2ft high. a couple said just laverty, and at least two, had laverty elev, on the side. and at at least two were taller than the rest. if my memory is right, i think they roller painted the name on, right in town. one trait on the lower roofed cars, on both sides, was a short piece of piping sticking out about 1 to 2 ", looked like a drain pipe fro the car roof. certainly an odd group! they were around until the rock started assigning blocks of jumbo hoppers to the branch. i wasnt aware laverty had more than one elevator, tho for having as many branches to the company as there were in indianola, i shouldnt be suprised. after the two kids blew up the dynamite bunkers near pleasant hill, things kinda went south after that!

They used those cars for grain? They look like carbon black hoppers to me. Weird.
