Seems the biggest "benefit" is having a number on the drone if one is found to track down who owns it.
Note the hundreds of thousands being sold.

Once you have one railfanning wont be the same for you !

I got my sons (both in their 20s) two small drones. They do not need to be registered because they are small. So far the best application seems to be having the dog chase the drone and then have the drone chase the dog.
