But, splutter splutter, I just told my kids to forget Harvard and go to trade school so I could pay for the last batch.

Same Price as the first run I think? Same MSRP, but this second run will be sold at the reduced dealer discount, meaning a much higher price to the consumer.

If you want one with factory sound, better get your order in. If the last run is any indication, Caboose Hobbies (my dealer of choice) has NO units with sound left in stock already. As many probably know Caboose is one of the largest, if not the largest hobby shop in the country. I know I will be getting another one, just haven't decided which number yet. 6936 is the obvious choice as it's still running with the Heritage fleet. If I recall correctly the next run has the horns located on the cab front. UP started relocating the horns in '79. Decisions, decisions.
Also, just an FYI. If you want sound, I would highly reccomend that you go with the factory install. By the time you get dual decoders, dual speakers etc it is doubtful you would be saving any money, not to mention the fun? of doing the install. Soundtraxx really nailed the sound on this one.

If I were ever to buy one of those, I think the price for the non sound version is more than I have ever paid for a single HO loco! I have laid out that much in a given order, but not since I lost my better paying job. Those are gorgeous.

I'm glad I trained myself to stop buying models that don't fit my road, era, and locale. I find it easy to say "No"...

I'm glad I trained myself to stop buying models that don't fit my road, era, and locale. I find it easy to say "No"... Me too. About 5 years ago, I probably would have bought UP 6936 and used the excuse that it could run through my modeled area with the UP office train or something. Now I just think about putting that time and effort into all the fascinating projects that involved with my own theme. It's fantastic that Athearn has produced a great model of this unique prototype, but I'll admire them from afar. Dave

Hopefully they will also do the 1994-2000 version of the #6936 in future (I used to have the OMI model of that version). The newly announced Athearn version of #6936 is correct 2001 through early 2011... If they did it with yellow frame stripe it would only be correct for mid 2011 through 2012...

The Athearn model does have the red stripe but sports the modified fuel tank that was added to unit in late 2007. So this means the time frame of the Athearn model is late 2007 to early 2011. Roughly the other "phases" of 6936..... Early 2011 - Present - Yellow frame stripe Late 2007 - Early 2011 - fuel tank modified 2001 - late 2007 - fuel tank is not modified and the unit has "baby wings" on the nose, air conditioning added 1991 - 2001 - The "classic" era. Standard lettering on the nose and NO "baby wings". No air conditioning and horn moved to between radiator fans. Has had its roller bearings converted from Hyatt oil to Timken NFL. 1984 - 1991 - more or less how it appeared when it was retired from regular service.

Jim, you left out one date in your UP #6936 info... Ditch lights were added in 1995 - splitting that "classic" era...
