Athearn's choice for road numbers on the Genesis Union Pacific DDA40X is very interesting. Except for two numbers from the first run, all the other numbers Athearn has chosen for their models are of units that are in some state of preservation.
Here is a breakdown:
1st run
6904 - Scrapped
6915 - Southern California Chapter - Pomona, CA
6925 - In derelict condition - Chamberlain, SD
6939 - Scrapped
2nd run - just announced
6913 - Museum of American Railroad - Dallas, TX
6916 - Utah State Railway Museum - Ogden, UT
6930 - Illinois Railway Museum - Union, IL
6946 - Western Pacific Railroad Museum - Portola, CA
6936 - Union Pacific Heritage Fleet
What preserved Centennials haven't been modeled....
6900 - Kenefick Park - Omaha, NE
6901 - Ross Park - Pocatello, ID
6911 - Mexico Museum of Technology - Mexico City, Mexico
6922 - Cody Park, North Platte, NE
6938 - North Little Rock, AR (Sits in front of Jenks Locomotive Facility)
6944 - Museum of Transportation, St. Louis, Missouri
For the truly modern and up to the minute modeler.....
6936 - Yellow sill stripe applied in 2011......

Maybe they're trying to suggest that those of us with layouts that couldn't possibly have a reason to run a Centennial might decide to have one stuffed and mounted?
One DDA-40, DC please, no need for sound ;D
Nah, probably not.

This is normal, should be of no surprise. It makes total sense that they should offer numbers of diesels that lasted a long time or into preservation. Athearn did this with the D&RGW tunnel motors on early runs too, the first being the preserved #5371
