Are there any options besides the ESU model?

You can use TCS EU621.That being said it depends how many functions you need.I changed my ESU 53614 out because they are not silent run. Plus i only use back and front light. The configureation of the function outputs is different on ESU so you need to make sure your brand X TCS in this case will do the job for you. I only use a ESU non sound decoder when my A unit or front unit is sound, it hides the motor buzz from ESU in mued unit. The ESU 53614 appears tobe decoder of choice in Intermountain and Bowser units supplied by these companies unless its sound.I am not impressed with the buzz, but it is a very smooth decoder.Steve................i replaced a ESU 53614 or similar in a Rapido GMD1 with a EU621 but remaping was a nightmare, i needed help from Mark.

Interesting comment about the "buzz". I've installed several ESU 53614 decoders and have never had that issue. Wonder if it's the specific engine model. Bob

I had a buzz not loud but annoying that changes with motor speed on Rapido GMD 1 and Bowser unit. This noise is a common topic. Its a sort of a up and down frequency noise. Some say its the quality of motors.Regardless who needs the noise.TCS EU 621 fixed that issue. I certainly wasnt expecting motor noise from ESU decoder.Steve

The noise is caused by the way ESU decoders read the BEMF - if you turn BEMF off, the noise will go away. It is a direct relation to the quality of the motor. A good motor with tight tolerances will produce no noise. The sloppier the tolerances are, the more noticeable the noise will be.
You can minimize this by setting CV124 to a value of 20, then do the Auto BEMF setting as described above. If the loco pauses too long before moving off for your tastes, set CV124 to 16 instead.
ESU is well aware of this and unfortunately the cure is not a firmware update. It will be taken care of with the next generation of decoders from ESU.
Mark.

I'm looking for a decoder for a Bowser SD40-2 that will run with Athearn units. I have not had much success using ESU decoders with NCE and Digitrax (have those in my Athearn engines).

I have found decoders from same MFG speed match easier together.Takes time with some decoders.Decoder Pro a big help for me. ESU decoders i think speed match best with ESU decoders. I find quite often i get slow and mid speed good then top end match is a gong show. Gearing to if its different in different locos could be an issue.Steve

If i remember correctly my few ESU doders dont run well at low speeds with BEMF off.I have not tried to offset this with other CVs.So BEMF is on.Same with my other decoders. I am trying to think why one would turm BEMF off.Of course if you have TCS decoder you could i guess use dither. Steve

Steve Steve, Have you tried the auto-setup procedure for the BEMF that's available on the ESU decoders? It has worked well for me. David

Prior to Loksound, none of my other decoders had BEMF, so I am accustomed to tuning a decoder with it turned off .... but then, I use some rather obscure settings to replicate the proto-type more accurately. Mark.

It's probably because I haven't spent enough time digging into BEMF, but I have found on several brands of decoders BEMF "out of the box" gave me poorer performance than with it turned off.
