I'm up early today - I'm a terrible sleeper! Here's some recent projects that I had the chance to shoot outside...........Happy Sunday! An LLP2K 4427 high side car.... An Exactrail low side 4427, both cars are painted with TCP Armour Yellow which is a good match for the prototype, but the decals are a bit on the lighter side. These cars were a regular sight on the Rio Grande. This is a Walthers 4427 low side cars that's had it's ends rebuilt with ladder stock and wire along with a Plano roofwalk, I've recently acquired two Atlas ACF 4650's in these colors to round out this group of cars which were also seen on the D&RGW. And another shot of SD 45 #5339, it's had Cannon & Co fans as an upgrade, it's a layout model that travels quite a bit - not a contest model!

Here's another 87RPM resin kit I finished up this week. This time a 1964 Plymouth Fury. I shaved off the large hood scoops to relieve it of its muscle car status and give it an everyday grocery getter look. The side trim was done with Bare Metal Foil and white, red and blue Microscale trim film cut to shape. Fantastic! How cool would it be to have 15 beautiful cars like this on an open trilevel autorack......

Well, I just got up today is my only day to sleep in all week! I managed to get a couple of cars done this week! First off is an Intermountain 1937 AAR Mod Boxcar Kit, replaced the sill steps with those from Yarmouth Models, much finer steps and being metal won't break. Painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Oddballs Decals. The MP had a number of subsidiary railroads, the International Great Northern was the railroad that complied with Texas Laws that required a railroad be incorporated in the State of Texas in order to operate. This is an Intermountain R40-23 PC&F Reefer Kit, the NYC received a number of reefers from PC&F, again I used the Sill Steps from Yarmouth Models on this car. Car was painted with Scalecoat II Reefer Orange, Boxcar Red, and Black. The NYC used these cars to move fruit (mostly bananas) from eastern ports to customers in the midwest. Thanks for looking! Looking good, everyone. Love that I&GN car. It's been a while, but we used to trade bare tables with the UP at the old Ginnie Yard at Tower 55. There's not much left of it today. I've been keeping my nose to the grindstone and cranking out the CAD. So I got some more goodies from Shapeways this week, including a couple things I've been anxious to try. Rockwell trucks, two versions: GRS Type G signal heads, two versions and sized for 0805 and 0603 LEDs. Still trying to figure out which LEDs to use and work out some of the details of the whole signal mast, base etc.: I revised my caboose toilet vent to include two styles: And finally some joint bars for Micro Engineering code 70 and 83 track: Still working on my Cotton Belt and Santa Fe cabooses, but not much progress to show just yet. Maybe next week!

Nice cars (and loco)! This is Standard Gauge Week...or at least that the pics I have for a change... Monon #1 is a crowd-pleaser (Cannonball Car Shops) from back in the day when most of this prototype-specific stuff was just a gleam in someone's model RR dream. While it is rather crude by today's standards, in the late 80s is was pretty hot stuff. The Durango switch crew is done getting the rear end back together at Durango. The wayfreight's motive power finishes up working the head end. Time to head out of town...Something way better than a FRED. Arriving at Hesperus. Passing a more modern Monon boxcar, also a long way from home.

Guess what, my first new car was a 64 Plymouth 383 4 speed. It was a 2 door sedan painted red with a white top. It came with 3:23 rear end without positraction or what ever MoPar called it. It ended up with 4:56 rear with welded spider gears. I rebuilt the engine using Forge True 12.5 pistons, a Isky 1012b cam and kit. I ported and polished and CCed the heads. I had a ball with that car!

That Plymouth is awesome!!! The detailing really makes it POP!!! It looks exactly like the car I took my drivers test in way back then, not to mention the activity that went on in the back seat. You really have a talent with these tiny vehicles.

John, that Plymouth is incredible. Nice car. The level of detail of your models is amazing.
Mark nice hoppers, and the SD-45. Ryan those Rockwell trucks are very cool.

Wow that Plymouth is terrific. That Cargill hopper looks like a prototype photo! fr8tkar-those trucks are awesome. Mike-I always enjoy the shots of your layout, but todays pictures are especially interesting to me.
As for me, I have been working on my CMR model of the Fyfe Building. This is a real building in Detroit. You can find pictures of it by Googling "Fyfe Building Detroit." Here is my progress to date.
By the way, the prototype is a fourteen story building. The kit is a ten story building that omits floors five through eight. There is an add on kit for the missing floors. This kit is a lot of fun to build.

That auto would look great on an open rack! Love the Cargill hoppers - they were pretty common on the D&RGW in the 1970's. I found some photo's in TO of Cargills being shoved by F units in 1971. www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?11,3914098,3914098#msg-3914098

Well I was in the need for some sort of sizeable Car/ Loco repair shop and Round house complex, I decided to go for some of the Walthers RR facilities kits and tackle the car shop first. The Railroad shop kits (8 total)#933-2970 became the starting blocks for what was to become a sizeable project. I wanted to give the side elevations a different appearance from what the basic kit provided, so after some research of existing North Eastern shop images I decided to follow the profile of the Reading Companies shop building in Reading, Pa. Thus the profile elevations in the first image below
3 bays wide with pits for two of the shop tracks window glass needs to be installed before the before the walls get glued in. Decided to tape the wall to help in figuring out truss/ beam locations, etc.

What type of glue or solvent do youmuse on a CMR building? Does it join easily like styrene? And how is the warpage factor? Walthers tall buildings can warp. Thanks I started using an old bottle of Ambroid ProWeld. I used that up and I am using Tenax. The model is made out of acrylic, so any solvent glue for acrylics works. There are some non-acrylic parts for which I used CA to attach. There is zero warpage! Absolutely none--that is what makes this kit such a pleasure. I recently constructed a Walthers cold storage kit and warpage was a huge problem. The parts are precision cut using a laser and they fit unbelievably well. I have not had to sand a single part, although the instructions indicate that you might have to do some sanding. I have built a couple of the Summit Custom cut models and the CMR models are much better IMHO. The most difficult part of bulding the kit is finding the parts. There are a ton of them and they do not come on sprues. The instruction booklet is excellent. The kit has a series of acrylic parts that you laminate for each wall. Except for the roof module, each module is four floors tall. I built several Bachmann City Scenes high rise buildings and warpage was a huge issue with those. The CMR kits are assembled in modules. This is not a kit you build in an evening, my progress to date was over two weeks in my spare time, but it is not difficult if you take your time and you carefully fit everything before gluing. I have had more fun with this kit than I have had in a long time. The kits are not inexpensive, but they are worth the cost.

Some Katy cabooses had them and KCS stainless steel bay window cabooses had them. Also, some Rock Island bay windows had them, Santa Fe Flexivan flats and at least one PFE reefer had them at one time. I would love to see a comprehensive listing of equipment that used them, but haven't found it yet.
