It is best to remember that Hornby is into many aspects of models and collectibles. In spite of 60 pages of comments on the UK RMWEB forum, they are no closer to finding the reason for their financial problems. The CEO they hired from a gambling company has left. It is a public company but does not disclose results by product line.
Hornby includes Jouef Airfix Rivarossi Scalextric (racing cars) Corgi/Matchbox and several other collectibles.
The best we could figure out is that they are top heavy, had a mess trying to get move from their old Margate property, went to an expensive logistics management company for warehousing and tried to put in a very expensive ERP system. The strong US dollar (all contracts with Chinese manufacturers are in USD), alienation of dealers and distribution networks by selling new merchandise online at highly discounted prices while not filling dealer orders.....and more.
On the other hand their newer high end locomotives and passenger cars for the UK market are excellent and sell out in pre-order.
The company has its problems and their banker Barclays Bank which is in financial trouble itself holds serious debt payments due in the next month which Hornby has warned they cannot pay.
Stay Tuned.

Spikre You are correct about Matchbox/Dinky. Although both originated with the UK Lesney brands. Hornby Hobbies lists the following brands. Airfix Hornby Trains Arnold (N) Rivarossi Lima Electrotren Humbrol Pocher Corgi Scalextric Superslot ken Jouef Pocher

Hornby has shown me outstanding customer service and I would not hesitate to recommend them or purchase another of their products. I got the" Rivarossi Big Boy 2-6-6-6" and the connector to the tender was gerfluken, they sent me one gratis after 1 email explaining the problem it was at my door in less than three days!
Expensive but worth every penny!
