Managed to finish a couple of new cars this week: Athearn PS 2893CF Covered Hopper Kit, a real PITA to build with the lack of instructions. Painted with Floquil C&NW Green and lettered with Oddballs Decals to represent a car that was repainted in 1978. Exactrail Evans 4780CF Covered Hopper Kit, Instructions much better than Athearns exploded drawing, actually took less time to build even though it has more parts. Painted with Floquil BN Green and lettered with Oddballs Decals. Thanks for looking! Rick J

Beautiful cars, Rick Finished one big project and am down to the details on the Outlaw Mine. I built up the mine's basic form outta black foamcore (I love this stuff almost as much as Sculptamold) several month's back, but got distracted and uninspired enough to finish it right away. This is usually a good thing as it helps me think more about where I'm going -- even if the project seems stuck. You can reference earlier pics in the SPF over the last few weeks. This week I added a bazillion battens, one by one, but worth it for the effect. I also added corrugated roofing to help keep the snows out. I primed it with Zinser 1-2-3 to keep the finish coat from eating ate the foamcore, then shot the final coat, added windows and doors, then wired for LEDs, getting the loading dock lights (16 of them) done just this morning. The project I finished was a rehab of my control panels. These were original and have been added to and subtracted from for various reasons as the layout was built. Most didn't really resemble the location they served all that well, so have been a pain for my operators to use. Another big factor was that they were made to control a DC layout, so needed block power switches closely associated with the track they served. I pushed the block power switches to the edge of the panel, usually the top edge, leaving more space for a clearer, cleaner track diagram to highlight the turnout controls that are most used with DCC power now. Here's a pic of the old above the new at East Dove Creek. The image of the track diagram is far easier to read and use than the formerly huge labels that dominated the previous version. Now the labels are small and can read for reference, if need be, but don't clutter things up so much. The next pic show the actual track depicted by this panel on the lower level), a huge improvement in legibility.

Nice work this week guys! Here's an outdoor shot of a recently finished Atlas RBL... On a sunny morning not too long ago, this is an Intermountain FMC 5283, a nice change up from the Athearn PC&F for a lumber car. And a Kadee 50'PS1 trailing the 3006.

Started building this recently since I scored this off Ebay. Mohawk Adirondack & Northern C425 2453 (rrpicrture archives is down again, but here's a proto photo-) It's almost done, gonna start detailing the trucks & it needs ditch lights and paint. Then i'll drop a loksound decoder in it, then wire the ditch and marker lights.

Here is a SP B-100-32 PC&F 40 ft car built for copper anode service I've been slowly working on. The sides are laser cut, the roof is a shortened Moloco, the under frame is a shortened Genesis Hydra Cushion, and the ends are Cannon Plate C. Dave Hussey

Dave, that's excellent! Count me in for one if you offer those laser-cut sides!
Great weathering on that Bowser SD40-2!

It looks like your getting really handy with that laser! Nice job on the boxcar. This is a very clean build!

Great stuff, the anode boxcar looks cool. So, last summer a friend offered me an unfinished train rack, and it was huge. I brought it home, and promptly split it down the middle, made a new upper, and a new lower, re-assembled into 2 racks. They are still big, 24" tall x 76" long, but they will be useful. I sanded them, and primed and painted them white. (last fall, when the weather was nice outside) I finally got around to cleaning things up, so I could install them in the staging area of my layout (wraps around my furnace inside the workshop in my basement. It's amazing what the white paint does for brightening the space (reflectivity of gloss white paint is good) Here is one with some models placed on it: Here is same one from out in the workshop: And the one on the otherside of the furnace: My staging area is double deck U shape wrapping around the furnace. (fiddle style) So the racks are great for motive power and stuff that is a bit hard to place into the storage boxes I use when a train comes into staging. Open load cars, cabooses, coilcars, open autoracks, etc... these will have a god home now. Regards, Brian

Here is an old Athearn SW-7 that I put together using photos of the actual locomotive. The cast in grill was removed and louvers and a mesh grill was installed. Spark arrestor, wagon wheel antenna, pilot details and rerail frogs we among some of the details that were added. The original motor was replaced with a NWSL can motor. Nickel silver wheels and constant lighting was also installed. This locomotive is over 25 years old and still performs as well as anything new on the market.
