I get kicked out of Cody's office and more during my visit to Model Railroader Magazine HQ. Coming Soon: You'll see my content on the Kalmbach end of things as well.

Great video. Thanks for sharing it James.
If I'm not mistaken that red switcher is a SW1500 lettered for Kinnickinnic Railway & Dock from project layout back in '72. Good to see it still survives after all those years.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm already getting a taste of the fun being robbed from making videos. That's why I'm reducing my videos to 3 or 4 a month soon. -James

I also have two, but as it happens, am working a different field. But if you find something you love to do and it pays the bills, then you can do lots of things!

I never used my degree for one day after graduating. But found the life experience in going to school after high school was a great lesson in life that I'd not miss.

I never used my degree for one day after graduating. But found the life experience in going to school after high school was a great lesson in life that I'd not miss. The only degree I ever received was my High School diploma and 30 days after graduation I found myself sitting in PRR's safety and operation classes and after that OJT as a student brakeman. After becoming a qualified brakeman I was probably making more money then some that had a collage diploma. The downside I worked a dangerous job, out in the weather, worked weekends and all Holidays except Christmas Day. By the fall of '66 I was driving a brand new '66 Ford Mustang not bad for a 18 year old lad..

But if you find something you love to do and it pays the bills, then you can do lots of things! My intent was not to sound snotty or anything, I'm just saying that I don't see myself working in the hobby unless somehow I work from home or an area I want to live in with low travel and good pay. I've spent 15 years traveling with the military, so I am so ready to be done with travel which I am for the most part now but still I don't want to go back to that. Many folks have said I'll work for a train company or a magazine but if both require quite a bit of travel and horrible pay, I'd rather find a regular non associated job and just make my videos at ease without it becoming a burden. -James

James, I hear you. I grew up a military kid and moved around a lot, Texas, Indiana, Massachusetts, California, and later Oklahoma, Indiana, Texas and New York and now Virginia; heck I don't really have any roots. My degree's and career were in geology and that involved a good deal of travel too - I'm no stranger to it and it does get old. These days I'm a DOD contractor in the DC area and work with mostly ex-military people; it's a good change from the private consulting dog eat dog world.

I believe that a lot of folks put too much emphasis on college. The most I directly benefited from it was 10% more pay at the Sheriff Department I retired from.
A young model rr fellow here in the area went off to No Dakota to learn how to fly and go into commercial pilot field. As he progressed through the school he heard from friends that had graduated and that the field was saturated with kids fighting for $20 per hour jobs. With his interest in railroading he applied with BNSF, hired in soon after and after a year or so as a conductor, quickly promoted to engineer and is loving it, and making a whole lot more than his pilot friends.
There are lots of good fields out there for folks not afraid to work.

I picked mine carefully, but with 20 years of management, HR, marketing, and logistics in the military that combined with the degrees I will hope can find me a great landing spot. If not, well my wife will be working as well and I can be a bum -James

WHEN I was working I always thought doing something I liked was worth more than the money I made. I'm not rich but I'm satisfied.
KUDOS on a military career, it was the best/worst time of my life, worth far more than the money I made doing it.
