Recently had the VERY satisfying experience of helping someone get started on a 'real Layout' by 'donating' some items I could spare. It's almost as exiting as when I started my own foray into this. My old DC powerpacks and my 'starter' NCE Powercab are now in 'good homes' and most of the bigger scrap from my construction phase will be used in another layout. It's the initial expense that is a major barrier to most folks. Once you have at least a loop down you can add to it over time, that first "4x8" is 'the hump'.
Pass it on.

Yep, agreed!
I did this a while ago with some young neighborhood boys. I made a small 4x6 layout for them, built it in my garage, and delivered it to them for Christmas, and assembled it in their basement. I bought them a small Bachmann train set to begin with. It was pretty simple at first (2 separate loops, no switches) and when they got used to that, we added on and includes a new track plan with over/under and a yard. I then gave them some good Athearn Blue Box loco's and rolling stock, so it would be dependable. They loved it! And it made me feel super too.....
