I was looking at trainstation products theatre kit for the BN Glacier View and it got me wondering if anyone has custom made a track inspection/theatre car with the large window on the one end?

Somewhere on my to-do list is the CNW Fox River #420 business car. I have all the drawings done, I just need to start building... maybe someday.

When you mentioned theater car, the BN car is the first thing I thought of since I haven't seen more than one or two of these things ever.
As for track inspection, D&RGW mostly used Sperry Rail cars like Walthers produced although they had speeders, hi-rail trucks and other means too.

The inspection car i've mentioned i guess is used more for the ceo's/president of the railroad. Its usually a single level coach with a large glass window on one end. Its similar to the GN/BN but without the big dome. NS, CSX both have these types.

A theatre inspection car is one of those things that I'd like to do someday but then I just always feel like there are other projects to work on first. Plus, then I'd have to go and build the rest of the business cars that run with it. Of course, if I ever did build it, I'd want to set it up so that I could swap the interior with a mini camera and record videos out of it. If you want some ideas, here's a page that has a lot of different inspection cars on it (although not all of them are the theatre style): www.northeast.railfan.net/mow22.html

I've been asking various manufacturers for a HO theatre car for years... Their issue with such a project is that they want to be able to do more than just one correct roadname (say 6 of them) and that really isn't possible given that all of the prototypes are quite different... They have been done in brass by OMI and other importers. OMI did the UP Idaho and Fox River (both UP and CNW versions) and at one time had announced the BN/BNSF Glacier View.
Kato and Rapido seem to have no qualms about doing a single prototype passenger car and doing multiple roadnames on it (one right, many not), so maybe we can convince them to someday do a theatre car.

This is funny as I am going to start building a Executive Business train for my proto-freelanced Kansas Pacific and I am wanting to build one of these myself. I am sure someone out there has built one of these they just have to be found.. The search continues...

If you're a freelancer, you can make your track inspection car any way you want. If'n I was doing it, I'd have an open platform (with the roof) about 15 feet deep. Then a bit of indoor space. Then an area properly stocked with beverages. With all of that, I suppose the Feds would require me to attach safety harnesses onto everyone in the outdoor lounge.
All this supposes that the track inspection is of the informal variety.

Well I wanted to do a track inspection car simlar to the Norfolk Southern uses currently and what the Susquehanna used to own. But i dont think the train station products piece will really work without customizing it and at that point might as well just do a custom piece anyway.
But I will do a open platform observation. I did make one as close as possible to the Susquehanna's 510 "Otto Kuhler" but when painted the gold leaf was awful not even close to a match and the flake bled thru the LV Cornell red. So it needs to be stripped, but when I do that the putty will end up softening. So i'll be media blasting the paint off some day. And I want to add all the lights to the rear platform also. When I decide to make a new open platform observation im going nuts with the lights, all will be working. haha (evil grin)

Thinking back now wasn't there an article on building the Conrail business train (or just a car or two) in a model railroader within the past two to three years?

I have argued the same point for a modernized heavyweight office car too. Jay
