Ok so we've been kickin around the RR book topic, so thought about RR Mags.... How many of you guys still buy RR Mags? news stand, Barns n Nobles, subscriptions, etc.
Over the weekend I started clearing out a bunch of boxes filled with years of RR magazines...mostly MR, RRC, Railpace, etc. '80s,'90s thru 2010 or so. Just touching the tip of the ice berg. I don't think I've bought one since then, internet prevails these days. Is it worth it anymore?
Cheers Alex

I rarely buy magazines anymore, preferring to spend most of my hobby money on newer HQ trains or layout supplies. While I like magazines, I've found I don't get as much out of them as I used to, partly just where I am at right now in life. I prefer saving up and getting good color reference books for modeling purposes.
I used to subscribe to MR and otherwise frequently picked up copies of Model Railroading, Model Rail Journal and Rail Model Craftsman, as well as some RL magazines CTC, PRN etc.
I've ended up with quite a few magazines and having moved a lot, it has forced me to shed quite a few but I still have several boxes worth, which I expect I will shed more of. I live in Townhouse which doesn't have copious storage so I have minimized magazine acquisition in recent years; my local library receives MR magazine so I can drop by and peruse there. Now that RMC is under new management and has improved a great deal and I'm liking what I am seeing.

Since Mainline Modeler went out of business, I do not have any other magazines. I do have a few RMC's and MR's for specific articles, but that is all. Although the new RMC is a possibility for a new subscription.

I get MR, Trains, Railpace, Passenger Train Journal and the Shoreliner. I only keep the Shoreliner magazines.
My club has an almost complete set of just about every US hobby magazine: MR, Trains, RMC, MRing, MM, NG&SLG, RailNews, PTJ, Diesel Era, X2200 South, Shoreliner, and a host of others (including the annuals like MRP). Better yet is that it is all indexed for free on MR's website. So if I need to research oil truck terminals or turnables, I can just search and find it at the club.

For my needs Trains Magazine,Railfan and a occasional MR due to the price versus the content. I read MRH monthly but, that too is a growing "yawn!"
I read "Classic Trains" if its interesting. I bought last years "Greatest Model Railroads" and "How To Model Today's Railroads". I might buy GMR 2017.

My mag count is much reduced these days. I won't be casting blame on that on anything but my current limited financial circumstances.
I currently still subscribe to MR, NG&SLG, NMRA Magazine, The Prospector (RGMHS), and read MRH, too.
If the money was there I'd also have RMC, Classic Trains (and maybe Trains, also), The Hoosier Line (Monon RRHTS), and Canadian RR Observor.
I prefer iPad compatible mags, but still enjoy paper. Both the NMRA and the Gazette note they do not plan on producing a digital edition at this time. The CRO and MRH, too, of course, are internet only production.

Am currently subscribed to:
MR Trains Classic Trains
I pick up at the local Barnes Ignoble as interest warrants:
RMC TRP Classic Toy Trains Special Kalmbach productions
RMC and TRP often enough that I really should subscribe. I fell off the wagon with Diesel Era a couple years ago and need to get back with that.
Of the defunct magazines, I most miss Railmodel Journal and its great photo articles on freight cars.
I am thoroughly computer literate, but am totally on paper. Which can make it hard to find here at times, but I paid for it once and I've got it (somewhere...)

I subscribe to RMC and MR. I download/read MRH each month, and buy TRP at Barnesnschnoble quarterly. I belong to PRRT&HS, NYCHS and PCHS and get their annual complement of magazines. Also download/read their respective modeling publications.
Didn't know Railpace still published.

For me, Classic Trains is the only subscription I currently have, although I do buy the occasional special issues like “Locomotive” or “Model Railroad Planning”. I may subscribe to Trains as Kalmbach keeps sending email and mailer offers with really low pricing.
The big problem is that my job requires a lot of reading, so by the time I get home usually the last thing I want to do is read. Frankly, it’s hard enough keeping up with the latest internet postings on sites like this one, let alone finding time to relax with a magazine.
Best magazine for photo quality and overall presentation has to be TRP. The content can be a little light sometimes, but it is definitely a quality magazine.
Thanks, Mark

I let my MR and RMC subscription expire six years ago. Seemed to me to be lots of adds and very little in the way of articles that interest me. I kept a few choice issues for articles of interest and the very first issues I ever had as a child, Malcom Furlow's Carbondale Central from 1988. I had two large moves since then, resulting in all surplus issues being "donated" to a local library. Beyond that, I may pick up an issue if there is an article or photos of interest, particularly in Classic Trains. I am a member of the Penn Central Historical society and have damn near every issue of the PCRRHS Post.
