Just wanted to post a link to an overpriced layout in my area for your entertainment. The layout is just a bunch of buildings placed on the tabletop, Kato track and very junky looking. There are not many pictures, no detailed list of items, there is no phone number to contact him and he even misspelled "Acela" and "Amtrak"!! So that tells me the layout is being sold by a secondary owner i.e. Son, brother etc. Or he is just a grossly uneducated model railroaded. This guy must think that he has gold! LOL Enjoy! Let the discussion begin!! What are your thoughts about this ad? What is the most you would offer the guy if you wanted it? What do you value the layout at? I would offer him $500 max for it all and at that offer he would be very offended! Yup! LOL $3500 Junk layout for sale

I don't know why this comes as much of a surprise, plenty of people out there selling their collections overprice or think their collection is gold when it might only have 1/3 of the value. Probably just another one of those, although without seeing the entire collection it's hard to say for sure (a few brass locos hidden in a display case somewhere might make $3500 more reasonable).
It also says $3500 or best offer, so you might be able to offer $1800-2400 and they'll take it if they're desperate or looking to unload quickly. But again, one can't make that judgement without actually seeing what kind of locos, rolling stock, vehicles and building kits they're including in those "over 2000 pieces".

I note the word "Coventry" in the presentation. Which is in England. Which is not in the EU. Today.
I wonder who covers the disassembly, packing and shipping.

There is a Coventry Rhode Island. I worked in Coventry on an environmental project in the late 1990's. It was about a half houro drive from Warwick where I stayed in an apartment our company had rented. It was weird sleeping at one side of the state and working at the other, so small is Rhode Island.
Anyway, Ebay is full of ridiculously price stuff. I just scroll past it.

To be fair, it's using Kato unitrak, in HO... That stuff is crazy expensive.

I bought some KATO unitrack from MBK for a test layout and it wasn't too bad - just curves and some straights. Probably it's the turnouts where the price goes up.

Figure the acela is $500 list price, the kato track is what, $1000 list? And $2000 in everything else isn't impossible. It sounds like someone googled the price of some stuff, set a price, and will see what happens. The Amtrak passenger cars are probably from the 80's and worth $10/each, if that, but if you google it the new ones from Bachmann have a list price for something like $60+.
Personally, unless there's some hidden gems I think 1/2 the asking price is probably more fair.

Anytime a layout is built and resold, the price and moving expense makes it worth just a little more than the items I have tossed away in the past year. Larry

Ed I have been to Coventry in the UK and it would cost you more than it is worth to get it back to the states if the layout was free. He needs to sell it to someone in the UK that likes Amtrak. That probably gives him about 20 possible buyers. Good Luck. Larry I see a few clues that seem to indicate the seller is in the US. 1) URL says Providence Craigslist 2) Header says Rhode Island > for sale > collectibles > by owner This leads me to believe shipping from UK would not be an issue. Regards, Ed

If The intermodal crane on the left side of the first picture is the Heljan operating crane, I have heard that those go for $1,500 to $2,000 on eBay. At last year's NTS in Portland, there was a modular railroad group with one of those cranes. The people running the layout told what those cranes ostensibly go for. I would never pay anything remotely close to that amount, but who knows.
