I checked out this system on the weekend, it looks really good, very easy to use, and the walk around throttle is great, it's got a throttle wheel and a color touch screen. Is anyone using this system that can give a bit of a review?

I've had the ESU EcoS for about three years now and have just started to acquire the radio throttles. The amount of things this system is capable of is pretty impressive. The wireless throttle automatically imports your engine list from the EcoS making it easy to select engines on the throttle. You can even upload your own engine pictures to the system, so both the EcoS and your handheld will also display the picture.
Yes, it's pricey, but you get what you pay for .... and you get a LOT with this system.

Do you have to get the EcoS to use the wireless throttle? Is there a less expensive ESU base station, one without the large display? As nice as it looks, I wouldn't use a stationary base station.

ESU is currently working on a command station base unit that is just that .... a command station. No controls, no screen. It will come with one of the wireless throttles and everything including programming will be done through the hand held. I saw a proto-type this past week end and it even includes a USB port(s) for charging the MCII throttle(s). It is still in the early stages of development and probably won't be available until early / mid 2017.
That being said, I do know a few people who are using the ESU MCII wireless throttle linked to a router and running through JMRI on their Digi-Trax system and claim it works perfect. Obviously, you won't be able to synchronize engines lists and button functions like you can through a full ESU system, but it would be one step in the right direction until the new system is available.
