I purchased from the Wegman's Grocery Store Magazine Aisle the July issue of Railroad Model Craftsman Magazine (RMC). I am very impressed with what the new publisher and editor have done with this magazine. I had stopped buying the magazine because in my eyes it had not much of interest to me. But I may subscribe now. Clearly, White River has set RMC up to be a magazine for builders (scratch builders, kit bashers, super detailers, etc.). They also publish Model Railroad News which focuses on new products and other such items, so there is somewhat of a separation between the two titles to distinguish them. The issue had an outstanding article on Building a MoPac SD40-2 out of an Athearn engine. The photography and text were excellent. It went on and on and it was just part one of the series. Another article on weather trucks was also outstanding. Personally, I want a magazine on paper in my hands. Electronic versions are just not the same to me. This issue was 100 pages including the covers, and was very content rich. Like all magazines, most of the advertising is smaller now, which impacts the page counts. A magazine with content will sell. The problem with many is today, they cut back on size and content to save costs. That makes buying them less necessary. Newspapers have the same issue. I am only sharing this because I was pleasantly surprised at how good RMC is now, which I think it good news.

From what I've seen, WR and their new staff headed by Stephen Priest and including Harry Wong, I'm not surprised of the changes for the better. Those who have taken over have a passion for the hobby and it shows. I am not familiar with all the names, but several of them a well known for a long time.

I'll have to checkout out, it's been a while since I've bought a magazine! Its been 15 years or more since I subscribed to a model railroad magazine. Decided to have a go with RMC...

I'm on the second year of my subscription, and I'm happy. It's money well spent. In addition to the articles already mentioned, is the seventh part of an article explaining railroad signal systems, and how they relate to a model railroad. All excellent quality articles, presented in a readable manner.

I thought RMC was already quite OK before the White River takeover. But now it's in a whole league on its own. Definitely worth subscribing, if you're thinking of doing so.

RMC is a much better magazine now; the fact that they honored exsisting subscriptions made the improvement all the more meaningful. The orientation is excellent.

It's a HUGE improvement IMO. The old RMC was "ok" but it totally depended on the issue. For presentation, they were never as good as some of the other magazines but for articles, even in the olden days under Carstens, they could really knock some out of the ball park. I have some RMCs I keep because they had some excellent articles such as the Pacific Fruit Express or the Trailer Train articles.
Since White River took over, the presentation has majorly improved and the content is overall much better. As always, articles vary according to interest and need.

Let's not forget the big improvement in the printing, paper and ink quality. Ciao. RG

I've completely switched over to RMC monthly sense the revamp of the mag and stopped buying MR. RMC is geared toward the experienced model railroader where MR is more and more geared toward the beginner.

I haven't bought a RMC in 11 years..Time has come for me to take a peek..That 2005 issue I had wasn't worth packing home beyond the article I was interested in.

$50 CDN isn't bad for a subscription either, it is 12 issues, correct?

SD90--I presume $50 CDN is for a year. I just renewed my subscription for a year and it was $37.95 US. I don't renew any subscriptions for longer than a year because I have concerns that any hard copy magazine might not be around a year from now.

In parallel, the latest issue of Model Railroader Magazine was only 82 pages. I noticed Athearn/Horizon is not an advertiser. Seems that is something after 50 years of steady advertisig. Content was OK, although nothing I find extememly noteworthy.

maybe it should be MRN ? "Model Railroad News". Athearn was never a steady MR advetiser from the 60s thru the 80s at least. but they generally did have the page inside the front cover in RMC,would that be page 1 or page 3 ? after the 80s the reading of MRs dropped off significantly here, then almost totally after the Library dropped them. Spikre They already produce a magazine with that title ? Athearn seems to me to be a steady advertiser for decades. I do not see older issues without their advertisements.

maybe I'm just Blind to Athearn ads from the mid 60s to the 80s. but if they did run an ad in MR it would be a small ad generally, unless around Christmas. but tne RMC ads were usually that full page in the front of the mag. YMMV Spikre
