I'm not sure if this is known information to a lot of people but I just found out that Via rail is planing to take back part of the trans Canada rail trail, lay new roadbed and tracks for dedicated trains to Montreal and Quebec with speeds up to 160km/h.

Nice to see rail banking work so trains get to use the ROW again.

Larry may have been wondering why it was posted in the HO scale section so I'd guess sarcasm. it didn't cross my mind that I'm posting in the wrong forum, sorry.

Larry may have been wondering why it was posted in the HO scale section so I'd guess sarcasm. Wait a minute. Are you telling me that folks who model nature trails in H0 scale can't post here? I'd bet you that there are more model railroaders without track than there are with track. Rail banking deserves time. In all seriousness, there isn't a place for prototype information and rail news. Perhaps dump it off in the lounge. But the lounge really hasn't been a good place for posting actual information. This Via news is interesting. Almost a first in the whole rail banking experience. Certainly no less a part of the hobby than all the pages of prototype information in the Bowser RS3 thread.

I'd bet you that there are more model railroaders without track than there are with track. Rail banking deserves time. I might be wrong but IIRC the intent was to somewhat mirror the old Atlas forum in format and keep it fairly simple, unlike some forums where the owner creates a gazillion topic areas and most of them are dead or very slow. So far the lounge has worked well enough for non-scale-trains related discussion. But Donnell is the forum owner so you can take that up with him. It is interesting. While rail banking was apparently done to give the option to re-utilize ROW, instances of it actually happen seem to be nil until now. If anyone feels a topic or a discussion should be moved, pipe up and say something via the report button rather than say nothing and be unhappy and complain later. At best, forums are imperfect entities and the old saying was never truer that "you can please some of the people some of the time but you can never please all of the people all of the time".

I live 30 feet from the current VIA Rail corridor between Toronto and Montréal. The problem with building a new line is that it will be a mile, or two, or more outside most towns on the route. What good is a passenger line that you have to drive to? In a perfect world, CN would build the line and VIA would buy the old one - you know, the one that already has stations on it. That would also move freight trains carrying dangerous commodities out of the urban areas.
Of course, I'm also happy if all the trains stay here, as I'm set up for the long haul trackside. But I'm betting it would take five years just to negotiate the purchase of all the land and pretend to satisfy all the NIMBYs.

The proposal that Via Rail should have a dedicated right-of-way is still just that, a proposal. There are many questions to be researched and answers to be found before this can move forward.
However, if Metrolinx (GO Transit's parent agency) can buy ownership of CN's tracks in the Toronto region (they did) then perhaps Via can do the same in the Quebec City-Windsor Corridor. Another possibility is Via buying CP's Winchester and Belleville Subs between Montreal and Toronto, CP currently only runs 6 trains a day on this route.
It is refreshing to see that Via's CEO Yves Desjardins-Siciliano is 'thinking outside the box' unlike his predecessors.

They don't need to negotiate or purchase any land VIA Rail is a Crown Corporation and so is the rail trail. That's the whole reason why they are going after the rail trail, the one I was talking about goes from Peterborough trough Tweed, Perth and from there it connects to an existing rail line straight to Ottawa and Montreal.
