Even with their minor discrepancies, these are still a hot item. My local hobby shop got a good size order of both singles and two-packs in on Thursday afternoon. By Friday night, they were almost all gone save for two singles !

Trevor,
Can you please divulge the info as to where you found the Linde 2-pack? Even a single Linde would work as I did not pre-order this car like a dufus.

I picked up the first of my two at the LHS yesterday, overall I like the car, it'll need some work (I'll enjoy making it a better model so no whining!)like new end and side rails, the trucks are quite interesting, the wheels have a rather heavy rim and will need change out. There is a rather heavy parting line that's easily seen just above the car number, here it's next to an OMI one I've had for quite a few years. Inbetween a couple of pigs just for fun.

Interesting that they put friction bearing trucks on that car, my OMI version has roller bearing trucks. No doubt they were changed out at some point since tank cars typically get more attention than most freight cars.

I thought so too, the pic Colin posted on the 1st page of this thread shows a similar car in 1966 with friction bearings. I found it especially odd since you'd think these cars were state of the art when new.

I missed the boat, but some dealer will have them. Regards, Bobby Some dealers have them but the fact they are sold out probably indicates BLI imported only reservations and did not risk a chance of having them on shelves. This is the now normal practice for most importers. In the past, BLI has imported way too many items and were forced to have blow out sales. Larry

Nice looking cars. I remember seeing them coming in & out of L.A. in the early & mid 70s. When were the prototypes first built, esp. without thermal shields?

The cars were built from 1960 until early 1967. The Thermal shields were a customer option, as was piping design. Both Air Products and Air Liquid opted for shields for most of their fleet. Air Reduction and some of the smaller operators did not always order with shields. The car design changed over the production period. Valving evolved, as did the operating compartment, as well as the number of reinforcing rings. Union Carbide elected to remove the shields from some of the cars they acquired mid life. Most were full service leased, and carried Union Tank car, or UTC Canada/Procor reporting marks, however Linde, Big 3, and Air Liquide acquired a few and operated them under their marks. There were a pair of 2 compartment cars built, and around 60 of the standard versions.
The first few were built with standard journal bearings. However journal bearings became illegal for new construction 6.5 x 12 (263K)cars in 1966, and they had to be changed over to roller bearing equipped wheel sets by 1969.
Literally to be accurate, you need pictures of the individual car you want to model for the period you want to model it. As Mr. Pitts has shown us with his exquisite models, every car is indeed different.

My pictures of Air Products cars show green paint, not black as on the models. The Air Products shielded car has about a 4 inch gap running the length of the shields at the top center line of the car. The model has no gap. The model has a body mounted brake cylinder with no levers or brake rods. The prototype had truck mounted brakes.

Does anyone know how long the UTLX "Linde" tanks were around? Into the 90s perhaps?

The Linde Division of Union Carbide was spun off as Praxair in mid 1992. Starting in early 1992 the Union Carbide lettering and the Cool Blue vapor stream of the Burns Cooper logo were painted out. The vapor stream because it was composed of blue Union Carbide hexes, which were trademarked. Leaving only the green Linde logo's. With the pending sale by Praxair of the rights to the Linde name in North America to Linde AG of Germany in 1996, the green Linde lettering started to be painted out in 1994. The paint outs were not particularly glamerous. White enamel paint was applied by a technician with a roller. Ryan Harris, 4 plus years, ago posted a picture of an Air Liquide Process Engineering built Cryogenic car that was formerly in Praxair service, where you can clearly see the green Linde logo showing through the paint out.
The era of the complete Burns Cooper- Linde logo on UTLX 80000's, as on the model, ran from 1985 until 1992. After that the Logo's began to be obliterated. Bill

BLI cryogenic tank cars were being sold by several dealers at the Hub Division show in Marlboro today (December 3), which is the biggest of the year in eastern Massachusetts, but I didn't see any decorated for Airco or for LInde, which were the two I bought earlier.

I saw at least one Linde car when I was there in late afternoon. There may have been others.

I got one of these for Christmas. They look very cool, even if I do not think I ever saw one in real life. Definitely a unique car.

For anyone at West Springfield, there is one vendor here with a few. Two of the Liquid Air (both 80071) and a two pack of the 6106 he is willing to split. $49.95/car but still better than eBay. Vendor is Perkins Hobby Depot in the BLC near Bowser - green banner with white lettering.
