To be fair and balanced, here is something for the Arlo Guthrie crowd.

The original version by the song's writer the late Steve Goodman. I was surprised the song was recorded by so many different singers. I watched a bunch of them and found some by Johnny Cash also. One version has Johnny Cash standing near the tracks watching a L&N train coming. The engineer is blowing the horn and when the conductor recogizes Johnny, you can see him waving and doing a double take while leaning out and waving back! Larry

Well then we are practically neighbors, I live in Tinley Park.
I did get to ride on the City of New Orleans on May 23rd 1966. I rode it from Chicago to Hammond LA. From Hammond I rode on a bus for 4 1/2 to get to beautiful Ft Polk to start Basic Training.
I remember it like it was yesterday. That morning my Dad drove me down to the US Army Induction Center at 615 W. Van Buren, Chicago.
In less than a year I was in Vietnam at the tender age of 19.

Well, Jim, we could have been neighbors..... I left Kankakee in 1975, when I joined the USMC. Most of my family lives very near Kankakee, now. I've been in southeastern, NC since 1981. I arrived at Camp LeJeune then. Got out in 1986 and found employment in the area and have been here ever since. I have ridden the train to Chicago & back in the late 60's/early 70's, but never on the CofNO.
