I have 3 different makes of HO Hancock Air Whistles and am trying to determine which ones are closest to scale size. The Details West ones are quite a bit larger than ones from Trackside Parts and those on Rapido's RDC. Would I be wrong in assuming that the Details West ones are incorrect?

I've never measured the Details West version, and I don't think I have a Trackside Parts one (IIRC, they have square corners, which is wrong). There is also a Custom Finishing version. I did work with Rapido on their Hancock as my club has one, and we in the NHRHTA were tasked with finding and measuring one for the FL9 project. We took a bunch of pictures with rulers alongside it and sent them to Rapido, as well as dimensioning it and sending the info. Going back into my notes, our real Hancock whistle was 17 1/8" wide, 11 5/16" tall, and 17" from front end of the chime to rear of manifold. The chime has a 4" diameter, and the dish angles back at 20 degrees.
So which ever one is closest to those dimensions would be correct. My bet is on the Rapido one.

Thanks! It looks like the Rapido one is spot on or nearly so. The Details West one looks to be 4 to 6 scale inches too big all ways. The Trackside Parts ones are pretty close dimensionally but, as you said, are squared off. I have the Detail West whistles on a Proto RDC-2 and they look way off next to my Rapido RDC. So which ever one is closest to those dimensions would be correct. My bet is on the Rapido one.

Is it possible there's more than one size of the real deal?

lvrr325, There were three variations in Hancock Air Whistles: the 4700, 4700-2, and the H4700. The standard 4700 has the reflector dish, the 4700-2 is the same thing with a heating element inside to prevent ice blockage, and the H4700 has no reflector (used on the rear of FL9's). en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hancock_air_whistleNote that both reflector types are the same size, and the reflector-less one uses the same chime as the other two.

The Athearn Hancock whistles with and without reflector are supposed to be available as separate detail parts in a few months.
