have just learned that March/April 2017 will be the Last Issue of Diesel Era. it seems they have finished the GP9 Series in the issue, but why didn't they just do the Series as a Book or 2 ? and another one is gone unless White River picks them up ?? Spikre

What a loss for both the railfan and modeling communities.

?? JD, could be a couple of things at work here: the store isn't carrying DE anymore. they decided to put out another issue any way. the store hasn't gotten the May/June issue yet,and that could be the last issue. what is covered in the May/June issue ? some one has moved in with fresh bucks to keep publishing ? would personally like to see the mag continue, but with a less than 3000 press run that seems to make them stand on very thin ice. Spikre; I'm with you, I hope Diesel Era lasts a very long time. The May/June issue has: Western Pacific GP40/Gp40-2s EMD GP9 part 40 Western Maryland CSXT's four axle GE fleet part 8 Steelton & Highspire Railroad - JD

I figured the best way to celebrate Diesel Era still being available was to buy a subscription. After buying many single issues over the years, I'm now looking forward to my first issue as a subscriber.

JD, do You have a subscription,or get the mag at a store ? now notice the Title line,"Seems" is a main word. do hope the mag continues some way. wasn't sure if WM had GP9s,so is WM the last original alphabetical purchaser of GP9s ? RC, lets hope they do continue until your scrip runs out. not sure if any one will honor the current subscribers if they do pull the plug on DE ? will need to find a new source/store if the mag does continue. Spikre; I have a subscription, but I have also seen it on the rack at the Model Railroad Shop. According to the article the Western Maryland GP9's were delivered in 1954, should be the end of the GP9 series. The Western Pacific article is actually about the GE U30B"s not the GP's. Really hope the magazine survives, we've lost too many good publications lately -JD

From Fallen Flags: I believe these were delivered in a light grey scheme.

Demise seems to have been a rumor without factual basis, then? I enjoy the photos but wish a bit more effort went into the articles. They seem to be prepped for people who already know, or think they know, the underlying story.

Roger, were the WSSB GP9s ordered thru ACL or N&W ? sure that ACL ended up with the road eventually, but not sure how the GPs were ordered. Gary, posted here to find out if DE was KAPUT. was told that the other day when picking up the March/April issue. but it seems more that the store is stopping carrying DE. so now to find another source for DE ?? Thanks for the Info JD ! but the Model RR Shop is just too far a drive from here. Spikre

Not 100% sure (I'll bet Warren Calloway would know) but I believe they were tacked onto an ACL order.

And fear not Spikre, the GP9 series has a little ways to go yet as there's the Western Pacific's 8, the Western Railway of Alabama's 2, and the Winston-Salem Southbound's 4 .

On the WSSB GP9's, two were ordered by the N&W and 2 by ACL/SCL. The WSSB after several years of paying for maintenance decided that the two owners could supply power cheaper than the WSSB could in owning it power. So the GP9's were returned to their respective owners. The two on the ACL/SCL are easy to spot as they, I think, are the only ones with Dynamic Brakes.
The WSSB GP9's were covered with the parent road coverage in DE. The pair in the Coast Live kept their WSSB numbers for awhile and the Two N&W units were immediately renumbered, can't tell you the numbers right now.

Roger, the gray GP9 looks great !! would think the GP9s ordered by ACL would lack Dynamics,as ACL came late to get Dynamics on the C-C units of 1964 or so. was looking for a caption: N&W had XXX GP9s,not counting the 2 leased to XX. thought the road was WS-SB,but couldn't find the caption last nite. now wont have to,,,Thanks guys !! so there are more W Roads for GP9s,but no X,Y or Z roads ? Spikre, according to the GP9 Wiki page the alphabetically last road to own them was indeed the WS-SB .

I got the May/June issue in the mail today. The magazine is well protected in the envelope it's shipped in and the content is always right up my alley. The CSX U33B/U36B article along with the WP U30B article were a real treat for this GE junkie.

?? didn't Diesel Era already do an article on the WP U30Bs back in the 90s ? or maybe it was someone else ? maybe the WP GP40/40-2 article will come in a later issue ? Spikre

Their incredible mishandling of the whole GP9 thing killed the entire operation for me.....hopefully whoever picks this up (if anyone) will learn from their example of what it IS NOT !

It is somewhat disturbing to me that someone would go to a store, not find Diesel Era on the shelves, then assume that they're out of business and then post its demise on the internet with nothing to back it up.

I read "somewhere" that the last issue was March/April 2017. No one will pick it up because the hobby is dying, so I've read. You must have missed the post where someone else reported getting their May/June 2017 copy in the mail. I have no idea what some of you are talking about or where you get your information. Some people really like their glass half-empty.

I think it has been established from subsequent posts in this thread that DE is still in business.

Around? OK.......In business? If you can call it that ! Time to sell the operation off to a more capable ( and I might add, enthusiastic) crew !

I think the latest issue is the July/August 2017 issue. Their web site is usually many months behind the latest issues.

Not exactly subscription only. Saw several copies of July/August in a local hobby store.
