20170903_161812_wm by Matthew Fisher, on Flickr I upgraded this Athearn Genesis 60' boxcar to match the prototype by spacing the trucks further apart. It was pretty easy and was suggested on the Southern Railway Modelers Facebook Page.

While the trucks do need to be moved to a longer spacing, you also need to lengthen the side sill to match. These cars were not used in auto parts service as Athearn leads you to believe. Some were built with flat ends(sheet metal covering the ribs) for paper service. Others we're used in general loading. Most of Southern's auto cars are in 40000 series numbers, mainly 43000. The Athearn car you have is good for most 16000 thru 17000 cars with some modifications. Take a look at the RR-fallenflags site for specific road numbers. I did a clinic on the modifications. I think it is posted on my Yahoo RPM page. groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/RPMclinics-JamesWall/infoScroll thru the messages and I did the clinic back 2015.

Nice model and useful info. I've always been put off getting any because of the auto parts description so their use in paper traffic means I can!
