I have an old remotored athearn c30-7 that I converted to a c36 years ago. The gears in those drives are horrible, noisy and bind. Result engines, look great, but run like crap
I wonder about the possibility of replacing the entire undercarriage/drive with an atlas c30-7 drive?
Anyone tried this?

Is it a Rail Power shell?

Athearn gears are fine; the models really benefit from a new motor.

In any case the gearing in the c30/u30 is binding up. These were remotored years ago with mashima can motors, so the issue is not in the motor. You hear the gearing clicking, and growling. I think the click is from the clip that holds the truck to the frame and locks down the worm gear. When I removed the motor from another unit and turned it into a dummy, it's ok but not free rolling due to the gear friction.
So the question I still wonder is if anyone has swapped the chassis for an atlas successfully?

Clicking? Could be a cracked axle gear. Athearns will do this, though usually they aren't noticeable when they do.

^ this. I'd want to see pictures of the drive, but I'm sure it could be fixed.
Still have no idea what the shell actually is, Athearn GEs are a scale foot too wide so I'm sure they'd fit on anything, if it's a Rail Power or some other shell then there's more likely to be fit issues.
